I'm new to vw and the forum. Be easy, i'm new but willing to learn and do the work. I got nothing but time and dedication, and willing to keep tabs on the projects i have ahead of me. I have an 83 rabbit gti 1.8l, some of you i'm sure have seen here before.(i found the old owner looking for diagrams)



right now i'm dealing with some ignition problems, the previous owner rewired everything to an ezwirekit. i've traced down pretty much everything. I've made sure that everything from the distributor to the coil and icm have been set up correctly. i had to resauter the hall sender for the distributor (which i hear is a common problem). i've also redone my timing.

the ignition is wired correctly but for some reason one of the 15 slots is running to the back of the fusebox. this can't be correct? also, when i crank from on to start, i lose power to the 2 15 positions.

here's a diagram of how i have the ignition set up(would have drawn out but no camera)


if anyone has ideas about the ignition system, i appreciate it. i am also curious about where ground positions would go.

this is my current rabbit. 77 4 door. has a 5spd swap with 1.8 8v right now. Have an aeb 1.8t motor and 5spd trans to go with it sitting next to it back int he states right now and a pretty penny saved from being stuck over here for the frankenturbo kit and other misc goods.

The "o" ring in the idle adjustment screw was shot. I had it replaced and the GTI ran great for over 1000 miles, until today when it left my kid sitting on the side of the road. I got it started after many attempts, and I could rev it up in neutral, but if I tried to put it in gear and pull out, it would lose power and not even pull out 10ft without stalling. I let the car sit for about an hour, and it started right up, I got out a can of carb cleaner and started spraying all of the vacuum hoses & connections, the rpm's did not rise durning carb cleaner spray, so I took it for a ride (which it would not do 1 hour earlier), I pounded it to 6000rpms in the first four gears with a little "flat spot" bog at about half gas pedal. Whats the deal with this thing?, one minute it will not even idle and an hour later I can pound gears like I'm in a road ralley. The car is bone stock and well taken care of by myself and the previous owner. Here's what I've got:
79 Mk1 with 1.6 CIS with points. Hasn't run in oh, I don't know 17 years?

I replaced the points, old ones were sort of cruddy. I get 12v to the 15 side of the coil with ign on. I have a horn relay in the fuel pump slot. Starter turns, crank turns, cam turns but no sparkey.

I've pulled the coil wire and can't get it to arc so that sort of takes any distributor issues out of the equation?

number one on coil to high tension ohm is within Bently range. The other measurement was to be a max 2.1 ohm and this one comes in around 2.4 or so. Could that little bit be the issue?

Since I've got the fuel pump relay swapped for the horn relay could that cause some issue?

These things are really pretty simple and not much there to go wrong. Can't figure what I'm missing.

On our way up, we spotted a SLAMMED broke down beetle. We... Noosh and I decided to take two cars for the trip, the Rabbit and the CC, Just in case.

On our way up, we spotted a SLAMMED broke down beetle. We were too late to pull over so we made a U turn. By the time we came around the Beetle was gone. After a little ride, we spotted it, it was up and running. Turns out to be Morgan.






Next thing you know Noosh broke down and we had a friendly hill billy help us get up and running. Once we got on the road, we pulled over again to help out a broke down Jetta cupe. It seemed that it broke an axle and the owner called a tow truck already.

We made our final Desent to Hellen.

Once we arrived we spotted all our Aones homies, and the rest is history!
