New York (CNN) -- Sunday's graduation ceremony at Hofstra University was a bittersweet affair marked by a moment of silence for a 21-year-old student killed by a police officer two days ago.

Many students at the university in East Garden City, New York, wore white ribbons on their gowns in tribute to Andrea Rebello, CNN affliate WCBS reported.

She was killed by police gunfire during a confrontation between a home invasion suspect and authorities Friday night, a police spokeswoman said Saturday.

An officer fired eight shots at the intruder, who authorities say was holding a gun to Rebello's head during a home invasion robbery at an off-campus house in Uniondale.

One shot hit Rebello in the head, Maureen Roach, a spokeswoman with the Nassau County police, said.

The intruder, whom authorities identified as Dalton Smith, 30, of Hempstead, was struck seven times and died.

Smith invaded the home Rebello shared with her twin sister and two others during the predawn hours on Friday.

At some point, a female roommate of the twins was able to leave the home and call police, a police spokesman told CNN on Friday.

Jackson: Jordan better than Bryant

In his upcoming book, "Eleven Rings," former NBA coach Phil Jackson writes that Michael Jordan was a better leader, shooter and defender than Kobe Bryant. The Los Angeles Times published excerpts of the book, which is scheduled to be released on Tuesday.

In comparing the leaderships skills of Jordan and Bryant, Jackson wrote: "One of the biggest differences between the two stars from my perspective was Michael's superior skills as a leader. Though at times he could be hard on his teammates, Michael was masterful at controlling the emotional climate of the team with the power of his presence. Kobe had a long way to go before he could make that claim. He talked a good game, but he'd yet to experience the cold truth of leadership in his bones, as Michael had."

Jackson wrote that the most "pronounced" difference between the two players was their shooting ability. Jordan shot nearly 50 percent for his career while Bryant has made about 45 percent for his career.
On defense, "No question, Michael was a tougher, more intimidating defender (than Bryant)," Jackson wrote. "He could break through virtually any screen and shut down almost any player with his intense, laser-focused style of defense."

Bryant responded to Jackson's assessments, via Twitter.
"The comparisons are apples to oranges," he wrote. "Wonder what the perception would be if (Jordan) played (with Shaquille O'Neal) instead. Different roles, different career paths."
Jackson wrote on Twitter that he was not putting down Bryant by believing that Jordan was better.

"Listen friends of (basketball)," he wrote. "Don't get hung up on words. I was most fortunate to have the chance to coach two of the greatest (guards) ever."

(CNN) -- The two women wounded when Los Angeles police shot at their pickup truck during the manhunt for renegade ex-officer Christopher Dorner will split a $4.2 million settlement, attorneys for the city and women told reporters Tuesday.

The details of the settlement need to be approved by the Los Angeles City Council, they said.
Margie Carranza, 47, and her mother, Emma Hernandez, 71, will receive $2.1 million each.
Carranza and Hernandez were shot at as police searched for Dorner, a former police officer who was wanted for killing several people in early February.
Hernandez was shot twice in the back and Carranza suffered injuries from broken glass, CNN affiliate KTLA has reported.
