How many times have the rod bolts been tq'd to spec? Aren't they a TTY bolt and are "supposed" to be replaced each time? High RPM's can bring out the worst in things like that...

You also might want to check to see if the fuel shutoff solenoid on the carb is working correctly. It's hard for a motor to run (in any mode) w/o fuel.

The check valve "holds" the pressure, the accumulator acts as a reservoir/surge tank to maintain pressure if the check valve bleeds pressure. It would be very hard to "vapor lock" a CIS system, as...

When my car was on CIS, what usually fixed it was a new/rebuilt CPR/WUR as this is what controls system pressure and prevents the meter plate from moving up while cranking.

Other than being clean and flow balanced, I really doubt you'll see any real gains. You only have one valve to squirt fuel at, so a split pattern does you absolutely no good.

What makes you think any other water-cooled car will have a colder thermostat? Find a 160*F thermostat for a VW and use it. That is about as "cold" as you will find for any vehicle.
