pulled the passenger side hub assembly and got a new hub and wheel bearing pressed in thanks to my friend Junior. Then finished up the brakes and picked up a new passenger...
yeah there is no set screw, going to pick up a new hub and wheel bearing tomorrow and press it out.

I have a 84 rabbit that was owned by an older couple that had it for 25 years since buying it new and garage kept it. Needs paint but no rot and is mechanically solid.

Its honestly probably the gauge cluster, Mk3's are known for having faulty clusters. Next time it happens bang on the dash with your fist above the cluster and see if it changes.
