If and when you get it to work again ..... never leave it all they way up..... always when you put it up hit the button down for just a split second to bring it down ever so slightly in the weather...
When I was replacing mine I wanted to see how the car would run w/o it plugged in and it was terrible. Plugged it back in and it smoothed out nicely.
oooooo take a look at your knock sensor.
If it's unplugged or cracked it could be ...I think.... doing what you are describing.

We did not get this engine in the states if my memory serves me correct.

Split the nut in half. Remove. Then clean threads and get another nut.

Reading about using a large inline fuel filter in place of that little plastic piece sounds promising.
The Bentley Manual has some instructions to function check everything..... including unplugging and even grounding out the wires to see if it's the cluster or the sensor itself.

Is the finger that presses on the high beam switch on the wiper stalk?
Can you press the switch with a screwdriver to make it work?
