You can remove the maf from the mk2 air box. Then take mk3 maf and trim mk2 air box to insert the mk3 maf. Might have to re drill holes to boot it on but looks factory.
5mm is only 2.5 mm difference from center on both sides. Only 13/64 difference. There is usually a + or - allouance

Sounds like crank position sensor. But I don't know about the newer motors be has out now. But was having hot/cold issues with my 2000 1.8t Passat and was the crank position sensors and the wiring...
