      If your towels were washed in reg detergent and fabric softener that could be an issue
      Hand wash them in Dawn etc and after rinsed rinse again in 50/50 white vinegar & water.

      Sometimes I have had good luck with IPA , usually I soak a small cloth and hold it on the blob then after a few seconds take it off and try and scratch the top off the blob then more IPA .

      Somewhere in its life it was not dried properly and it got mildew... dunno if it will come out. Try soaking it in white vinegar then washing.

      No mater what you do your going to remove any...

      No mater what you do your going to remove any protection so count on reapplying.

      My steps would be wash a panel ( trunk lid ) with blue Dawn then dry it and see if the stuff was water soluble....
