Thread: Wasserboxer carb -were they ever on a 2.1L or just the 1.9L??

  1. 04-19-2004 07:47 PM #1
A doka I just purchased has a carbed wasserboxer, but it's an '88 which would lead me to believe it should be a 2.1L. I haven't checked engine codes yet, though. Anybody know either way. Oh yeah, its German obviously for it to be carbed.

    Thanks.

Hey Rob. I think the German trucks are all carb engines until '89 when they went to 2.1l FI for everyone. The reason I say this is I am in discussions with someone that is selling an '89 from Germany that is a FI 2.1l Are these the ones i've been waiting for? Send me some pics please, please, please.

    Hi Daryl,

This indeed one of the trucks. The thing that puzzles me is that my 87 doka syncro had a 2.1L FI and it was the higher powered 2.1L at 112 hp(?) I can't remember the exact figure.

No pictures quite yet. But the one is as nice as I was hoping/expecting.

Strange. My 87 Vanagon Syncro has the FI 2.1l but I think it has only 95hp.I saw an ad on ebay awhile ago selling solid lifter kits and an ECU chip. The ad said those mods would bring the hp figures up to the Euro models. Are you still keeping one of the DOKA's for yourself? I have some money burning a hole in my pocket.

I just found another Syncro Vanagon for sale, it is supposed to have a really good body. I would rather have the truck though. Which one do you prefer? Please keep me posted.

P.S. How do you post pics on this site?

I believe there were two different variations of the 2.1L, one with a higher hp rating. My 87 german doka syncro hauled a$$ compared to my Canadian equipped doka syncro- maybe it was the autobahn driving broke the engine good

I'm not keeping any of them. I already have a full stable. The '88 I have is the nicest, although its not a TD like expected

It has Canadian ownership. All original paint, very straight and 98% rust free, tilt, 1/2 roof rack custom made over the tilt, front fogs, factory velour interior. It runs very nice. I'll shoot some pics soon. It won't last long given its condition.

I've yet to post pics here, so I can't help you sorry.

The 112hp DJ code 2.1 requires majorly high octane fuel. Even the 91 we get in Canada you still have to retard the timing or it knocks.

I never noticed any knocking or other misbehaviour in the time I drove the truck- fortunately. I ran mid-grade and high grade mixed every other fuel up- shell.

The 2.1 came in two versions - both with Digifant. The 95 hp version with 9:1 CR and US cat, and the 112hp non-catalyst version with 10.5:1 CR made for 98 octane leaded fuel. No knock sensor! I've always wondered how it would work to retrofit an early Bosch knock sensor ignition from a CIS-E 10:1 GTI or GLI to make this engine work for the US.

As you know, the 1.9, came with a carburetor and 78PS or something like 75 SAE horsepower. The 1.9 was sold alongside the 2.1 from mid 85 onward as a cheaper engine choice.

Hi I have a VW Syncro conversion with a 2.1 liter Audi carb engine. My fuel consuption is between 18.5-20L/100km waaaaay to high!!
We shecked the carb (weber double barrel) for any faults but could not find any Which other carbs fit on this engine?? Don't want to make a racing car out of the van, low fuel consumption is king!
    Any tips welcome
    Thanks and a great forum

    Wow, dinosaur thread revival here!

Never got to drive that DoKa with that engine long as the head(s) starting leaking almost right away. So I can't comment on that. I can comment on my Type IV 2.0L air cooled engine in my Westy however. I bought it with a single Weber 2 barrel carb. Same pukey performance and low fuel economy. I upgraded to dual Weber 44 idf's. Total transformation. Even acceleration- no flat spots, the carbs could actually be run in tune, more power AND best of all better fuel economy. The logic behind it is better fuel atomization. Each carb sits over each cylinder head thus allowing the fuel-air mixture to simply drop into the combustion chamber rather than having to travel through a long set of intake runners and make a large bend before dropping into the engine.

My advice. Source a T3 2.1L and swap over the FI. Should be a bolt on mod that'll pay for itself in fuel savings.

The van sounds like it could a Euro import. If so, maybe it has a short final drive also contributing to the fuel economy. What's yours trans code?

    Guido,

Are you referring to an inline-4? I have an Audi 2.0 w/ a carb in my LT35 which is essentially the same engine used in Porsche 924. Porsche had FI and cams for better top end. Anyway, I found out the single carb for the 4-cyl Landrover with a gasoline engine is compatible. Jetting might need to be revised but the linkages are the same.

The South African 5-cyl bellhousing can be used to bolt the aforementioned engine to the Syncro transaxle. This is the reason I am thinking that might be the Audi engine in your Syncro. There are other Audi engines that can be made to fit. So unless you are more specific about the engine in your Syncro, it is difficult to advise accurately.
