Thread: Engine code 17536 P1128 Fuel Trim Bank 1 System Too Lean

    1. 05-05-2004 11:47 AM #1
My 2000 Jetta 1.8T has been perfect. At 75,000 miles, I got the engine light on and my VAG COM software has scanned one fault code:

17536 Fuel Trim: Bank 1 (mult): System too lean
      P1128-35-00--

this seems to be an intermittant problem as the light has gone out on its own and then came back. When the light is on, my car is definately not as powerful as it usually is when normal.

What part under the hood is this? Dont have the Bently or factory manual to figure out. I know it is fuel mixture and think that it may be the MAF sensor. Has anyone else had this problem? How did you fix it?

If it is the MAF, are there any aftermarket high performance ones out there?

      Thanks - Andy.

Sounds like your fuel filter. Change that first.

17536/P1128 is the classic code for a MAF failure on a MKIV car.

Had that same code last month, one new MAF later, no more CEL!

It's either the MAF or one of the O2 sensors.

The new job keeps me plenty busy and the car is still running great. I just bought a bunch of parts to put an OEM sports suspension that a friend (5.0 eater) gave me. I'm also going to finally replace my cat so I can pass emissions. I bought a DP/cat combo from perf-cafe.

FYI, someone rear-ended my wife's Sentra and totalled it last week. We picked up an '04 Passat Wagon 1.8t last Thursday. It's great, but I feel like a VR6 traitor!

Sorry to hear about your wife's accident.

Glad to hear you got another dub, at least this way she can appriciate your dub skillz!

I was looking into that CAT with the Downpipe, if you get it, let me know if there is a power gain, I was looking into that one as well, just needed first hand feedback though.

I'll be installing it end of May / beginning of June. FYI, it's basically just a MKIII DP and a TT cat. The perf-cafe deal is pretty good. I got the combo for $410 (up to $439 now) which isn't bad considering Impex charges almost $400 for the MKIII DP alone!

Back to the topic at hand ...

      IT'S THE MAF!
