white smoke-burning oil?

hey guys , i notice that when i floor it my boy tells me he sees white smoke blow out of the exhaust only when im flooring it ..what could this be ? if i drive hard during the day i notice it burns a good amoutn of oil and need to put in a quart or two after like 2-3 days of hard driving ..do any of you guys have to refill the oil after a couple of days of hard driving??? i haev 256 cams in the car. anybody know anythign of this to help me out?

Over-rich mixtures burn black.

A motor with bad valve guides and/or rings gives off blue.

White is indicative of water. Could need a new headgasket, but white steam at startup is water condensation in the exhaust pipes.

Assuming that you are using antifreeze in the radiator (and not straight water), the glycol in it has a distinctive sweet smell after it passes out through the exhaust pipe (same smell as when an engine overheats and "spews" coolant).

my VR normally burns off one quart between oil changes.

unfortunatly this is probably your problem, vr's are known for having week head gaskets. check your coolant before it becomes a bigger problem

good call all_driver,

my vr was not a fan of its original head gasket either, watch coolant levels like a hawk. you could always put the mkIV head gasket on, it'll bump compression four tenths = bit more power and a nice compliment to your cams.

its most likely the head gasket, u could always do a compression/leak down test to see if thats the problem

I agree with everyone above. White smoke is probably coolant. Blue is oil.

I go through about 1/4 quart through my 5,000 miles between synthetic oil changes. I don't drive very hard though. But topping off the oil every couple days seems to indicate a problem of some sort.

check my coolant level ?? my coolant is to the max..recently flushed and added in fresh coolant wit water wetter..and how much do headgaskets go for ?? for the mk4 one ..if you guys say it will compliment my cams more ..and how much would a compression test run around???

HEY I GOT 98 GTI VR6 .. SAME PROBLEM JUST FIXED IT .. ITS YOUR VALVE STEMS.. THERE A BUCK APIECE BUT YOU HAVE TO TAKE YOUR HEAD APART.. I PORTED MY HEAD PUT HIGHER COMPRISON HEAD GASKET AND A 256 CAT CAM WITH BIG LIFT ON IT PORTED MANIFOLD.. I HAD A CHIP TUNED FOR IT .. AND RAM AIR. NOW IT PUT DOWN 192WHP.. AND 182WTQ.. ITS FAST I WAS NECK TO NECK WITH E46 M3 FROM 35-110 MPH BEFORE WE HAD TO BRAKE...

my car runs 13.7 1/4 and weight is down to 2550-2600.. i dont know what m3 runs in the 1/4 mile but.. i am pretty sure its around that..

you shouldnt be burning any collant unless you have a bad headgasket.. then your car should be blowing white smoke not blue..

when you do a head gasket you need more than just a head gasket itself. buy a whole gasket set and head bolts which will be around $150. if you dont know how to do it yourself a shop will charge you anywhere from 1000-2000$ in labor. its actually a pretty easy job and i can do one in about 10 hours. but ive taken my motor apart like that many many times. if youve never even removed your intake manifold dont even try it. just take it somewhere. also you'll only have a bad head gasket if you have white foam or gel on your oil cap or if your coolant is starting to turn black and your car is smoking like a mofo. you can have a slow leak which will be less noticeable and harder to diagnose but if its leaking its doomed so just drive it till it pops so you know it was the HG for sure or replace it now.

Pull spark plugs out and see what they look like, try reading them. Surely burning that amount of oil will leave traces on the plugs.

I've seen and conclude that a sudden WOT (wide open throttle) will produce white smoke in the exhaust, raw fuel. I know a rich mixture is lack smoke but a gush of fuel comes out like a white cloud, not quite flooded.

I'd suggest a leak down test to the cylinders, see where the air comes out, you may have a tight engine still, or not.
