    Thread: HPA Motorsport + MotorTrend + 400+hp

    1. 08-11-2004 05:23 PM #1

HPA Motorsports Inc. is proud to announce its involvement in working with Motor Trend Magazine to build a wild, 400+ hp car for charity. A simple enough exercise right? Not so when you factor in that the entire car has to be assembled from parts available for bid and purchase at ebaymotors.com.

The entire build is part of the Primedia Editors Charity Challenge, involving ten teams from different Primedia publications who have been giving $25,000 to build the best and most desirable car they possibly can from parts available on ebay.com. Ultimately the vehicles will be performance tested and then auctioned off for charity (and, of course, for bragging rights as to which vehicle is the coolest).

The deserving charity is Charity Cars of Longwood, Florida, a non-profit organization devoted to supplying needy, work oriented people with safe reliable automobiles.

John Kiewicz of Motor Trend started this challenge with a rare find on ebaymotors.com, a 2000 Golf GTI with a 4motion conversion already installed for $10,000! Although a bare bones chassis with no engine, this is a terrific start to what will be a budget performer. In addition to the shell, a 2.8L VR6 sporting a 390hp HPA turbo system and 6 speed trans was sourced for the power plant. Other pieces squandered off of ebay include: a custom leather/suede interior, nitrous oxide looking bazooka subwoofer, a Euro-spec R32 body kit, and a KW coil-over suspension system.

Looking over the parts list and watching the car get assembled in the HPA shop has left me to believe that the other teams involved in the challenge should be pretty worried, because this car is together, it’s going to haul. But then again this isn’t a personal competition…it’s for charity. Yea, right.

Sounds like a real challenge, but I don't think that's going to happen. Right off the bat your car has a turbo kit and suspension that didn't come from e-bay.

true... i guess hpa could just post a supercharger on ebay that they could rebuy though... so i guess they technically could do it... although thats sorta cheating

That was my first thought. I'd like to see the auction for the car and motor, one day listing or buy it now..?

Kinda like when rad rides built the ebay mustang, the only thing from ebay was the original car which in the end very little remained.

This is a great idea! Possibly one of the best magazine challenges to come along in a long time!

I will definately want to keep up to speed with this endeavour!

that is incredible. Building a 400HP 4motion car for $25,000. i wish I had the know-how nad spare cash to do that. Man, a years worth of weekends in the garabge to build that would be well worth it.

The only thing I don't dig is the Nitreous-looking woofer. It's a litttle too "Pimp-my-ride" for a performance car. Oh well. Can't wait to see the finished product. It would be really funny if the car out-performed the $50k R32 that they already built. haha.

      Very cool!

      Is that a 12V mill or a 24V mill?

Do you people even bother to read ANYTHING?

Within a short time, on eBay I had searched around and bought numerous used aftermarket parts for my poor man's R32 project, including a modified VR6 2.8L V-6 engine fit with an aftermarket Quaife six-speed manual transmission (a stock Golf or GTi has a five-speed manual gearbox), a used European-spec R32 body kit, a custom stitched leather interior, a set of used KW Suspensions coilover shocks/springs, a nearly new set of disc brakes taken off a 2004 R32, and a used (yet complete) single turbocharger system with intercoolers that a guy took off so he could upgrade to a larger twin-turbo setup. Oddly enough, the turbo system was originally from HPA and was installed years earlier on a customer car, thus, if there were any calibration questions the HPA crew could have us tuned up in a flash. That was the idea at least.

Very cool project! Can't wait to see it done!

      Cool and all.

But as a past participant in the grassroots motorsport challenge for 2K. I'd like to see some of those guys have 25K to spend heck even 5K. I bet there would be a lot of magazing guys standing around wondering why there 25K car just got its butt kicked! Last year a guy built and raced for 2K and was running 10's and a decent handful have been in the 11's.

But since it is for charity

i really hope that nitrous oxide bazooka woofer 's purpose is for throwing out the window to celebrate its completion....

Straight line isn't the only measure of performance. Lets take one of those 10 second drag cars and put it on a track with turns and see what happens.

So would it be cheating if they just built a car, then put it on ebay with a 25,000 buy it now price and buy it as soon as they post it, so technically they bought it off of ebay?

    22. 08-12-2004 02:37 PM #22
Pfft! Dalhback's RS1 will take it!

Can't wait to see the finished product though.

They had something like this before, I believe it was shown on TLC. It was a challenge to buy, build, and modify a classic Ford Mustang using nothing but Ebay parts.

It was completely rebuilt and I bet 90% of the crap put on the car did [not come from ebay.

It would be great if this contest was produced for a television show.. Imagine several teams building VW's like Discovery Channel's "The Great Biker Build-Off"

      "nitrous oxide looking bazooka subwoofer"

      WTF!?!?

it's ironic that hpa used to have a silver golf with a tt drivetrain conversion

Old project cars never die, just find new and exciting homes. ps. The shop has built over 20 4-motion conversions since 2000. There could be one hell of a deal for highest bidder one this car when the contest comes to a close. We are proud that the VW badge entered the ranks of the competition.
