Thread: p1296 code, whats it all mean? 2001 jetta vr6,glx,auto trans

    1. 10-11-2004 09:46 PM #1
Bentley shows it as cooling system malfunction, but I dont have any cooling problems.Went to auto zone to pull up the code with an Actron Meter,it said fuel air metering on the Actron. When they looked it up (p1296) it says 'multi-faults-bank 2-with low side shorts.'
OK,gentlemen, what gives? Will this affect smog testing if this code shows?I erased it with the Actron.
      Thanks a lot,
      CC

According to the Bentley CD ...

      P1296
      17704
      Malfunction in cooling system
      - Check Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor.
      - Check thermostat.

If smog testing is like OBDII testing in other states, then you'll fail if there are any codes stored in memory.

I think that is the code I got when my engine temp sensor was bad...

If you clear it... it might come back in a few days like mine did.

I have the same issue currently and want to replace the sensor. Where exactly is the sensor? A photo would be great.

couldn't find the faq thread of the cts thread. the cts thread is in the vr6 section of the faq. The faq thread is stickied at the top of the mkiv forum on page 1.

i replaced the coolant temp sensor but now my gas mileage is really bad. im pretty sure i put it in right. the code i got off of the obd 2 was p1296 but it said the fuel air metering, etc as you all already know. do you think its possible that it was my MAF all along? or is there a problem with the installation?

i have the same problem, i replaced the cts and am still throwing p1296(fuel air metering), and my gas mileage sucks. wondering if and how you fixed your problem.

p1296 code not only comes when the temp sensor is bad, it also puts out this same code when your coolant sensor is bad as well....

I just got this code today and also have green top sensor already. Could it have gone bad? I've had it in there for ~3 years. My car was stuttering before the CEL showed up. After reading the code, I unplugged the MAF and the car ran better. In a book I have for OBD2, it shows "No 5v to MAP" for P1296. What is MAP?
