I completely disagree. I would hate those seats, which is why I don't like going to the theatre. I'll take a couch ANY day. Allows me to spread out and my g/f to lay on me if she wants. Not a fan of projection, either. To each their own.

<edit>It does look nice, like a [cigar] smoking room

My friend and his buddy had Yamaha recievers with same JBL speakers. He moved, so for a second I thought it was his new setup in the new house.

anyway...... Now I wonder if Yamaha had some specials with JBL's at one point, or it was somewhere recommendede that the JBL sound great with the Yamahas.

What kind of sub do you have hooked-up , and what model is that Yamaha?

Well, I used to work at Best Buy and at the time....about 5 years ago, the audio dept. guy is who suggested all the stuff I bought, I compared the JBL sub to the Yamaha I have, and there was no comparison, the Yamaha sounded way better. I have everything hooked up with Monster XP wire and it sounds unbelievable. I just don't get people that spend like 5,000+ just on a pair of speakers, I cannot imagine it sounding any better, and I bet it would be next to impossible to tell.

Anyway, the sub is a dual 8", model YST-SW160...

I dont wanna make this a he said she said thread. But after I bought by yamaha YST-SW215, I helped a friend together his system and he got a great deal on a JBL E-250P and that thing just blows the socks of the SW215. Its not boomy...its very crisp and clear in delivering the low freq. THe yamaha rattles when trying to deliver some of the same sounds.

I just cannot fathom spending that kind of money on a speaker.

That's why you wait for year end sales and save a bunch of money

Here's what I posted in the Home Improvement forum before this forum existed. Since then, I've upgraded to a SVS 16-46PC+ sub. I love my setup!

The first picture is a before shot. I measured the
height of the wall and the TV and decided how high to
build the stand. This picture just shows the TV
sitting on the rough stand I built for it.

The second picture shows the big hole in the wall.
I've attached the stand and started to frame out the
shelves on the side. That's my brother-in-law helping me

The third picture shows the progress as I added the
    drywall...

...and the fourth picture shows the TV and
    equipment in place.

The last one shows it with some
stuff on the shelves, and a final piece of trim added
around the stand. My wife moved all that stuff off
the shelves and put more "decorative" stuff there
after I took these pictures, but I think it looks good
    either way.

There's also built in speakers on the back wall and mounted speakers on the side (7.1 channel surround.) All wiring is behind the walls, there are ZERO wires showing. I'm pretty happy with it!

stick with your best buy specials. if you can't imagine it getting any better, great for you, be happy.
But if you ever go to an actual high end audio store and listen to probably anything in the store, TRUST ME you will hear the difference.

I did exactly that and heard NO difference. I like my Athena Tech/Best Buy setup better than the Paradigm stuff I heard at a dealer and I walked out the door from BB with a 700w 7.1 Yammy receiver, 2 floorstanders, 2 rears, 1 center, a 10" powered sub and cables for $1100 bucks.

i got my athenas on super sale with a buddy....when they originally came out they were $4000 for the pair....i got them for pennies...it pays to wait for sales

Yeah, no problem at all. I left some space on the bottom (near where the TV vents are) for that purpose, and to run cables around back there. I've had it for a year now with zero problems.

    mightyjlr,
What size TV is that in your living room set up? 30", 34"?? It looks good.

  22. 01-06-2005 03:40 PM #127
they are the old seperate system....you can either combine them to make 2 floor stand speakers or seperate them and have 2 subs and 2 mains or combine them and have the ability to switch the subs on and off...the possibilities are endless. the line is now discontinued because the general public couldn't understand the idea of being able to seperate them and they have gone to the standard one piece floor stand style....it's the s1,s2,s3,p1,p2,p3 line. super super nice i love them....i did a bunch or research on them before i bought and found out they are made by the premiere canadian speaker makers who also build all the mission, infinity, and energy speakers.

Athena makes the speakers for all those companies?

did you forget to take off your "scully" at the High end shop? that might make the paradigm's sound somewhat similar to the things you mention. Seriously do you think Audiophile grade amps/speakers/cable is a scam?

I don't know what you're attempting to imply with your "scully" comment, but it seems rather childish.

And I don't know where I stated that anything was a scam, I explained my experience. The Paradigms showed me no gain for the extra $$. I'm happy with my setup and was sharing my personal experience.

allright, i was attempting to make a funny comment that explained why you might think your setup is so awesome. (a winter hat, a scully, would muffle the sound)
paradigms aside (I never said paradigms were the best, but they can be very good), go listen to some "real" amp/speaker combo's and I think you will hear the difference.
suggestions (stuff I have heard that is amazing)
B&W nautilus series with Krell amplification
    PSB stratus with McIntosh amplification
etc. if you can't hear the difference, you have no business posting in the HT forum.

You seem to be getting all wound up for no reason.

I said that my setup suits my needs. I said that the comparable Paradigms I heard didn't offer me an improvement over what I ended up with. I'm missing where I said anything about high end audiophile equipment being a scam or that there's no difference between a $300 speaker and a $4000 speaker.

Thanks for crapping on a great thread

My system is modest, I never said anything about my system better than yours, I said there is a HUGE difference between anything you can get at Best Buy and say the 5,000+ speakers you mention above. That statement got me a bit wound up because I found it to be ridiculous and ignorant.
    MY setup:
Onkyo Reciever (don't know model off hand)
    B&W 601 fronts & surrounds
    B&W CC6 center
    Velodyne cht-10
    audioquest f14 cable

Learn how to quote people first and then start attacking people's comments. I never even made that comment, you quoted the wrong person Einstein:

I worked in a high end stereo shop, and even then, I dont see the point in paying 5 grand for some speakers.
