Actually VW came out with their own list. That list didn't contain all mfgs. I don't know if this is the posters list or the list produced by VW.

Anyway there are other mfg products that meet VW 502.00 and the viscosity requirements generally accepted.

BTW: Chevron makes excellent oil. At least diesel oil. Thats what I used to used in my TDI. Excellent product. In fact. I might give this 5w-40 synthetic a looksee.

It certainly isn't complete, since there are oils with the VW 502.00 rating that are not on this list.

It also includes an error by listing Valvoline Synpower 5W-30, which Valvoline does not claim meets VW 502.00. See this link to a PDF on Valvoline's web site:

      https://www.valvoline-technolo...ument

Valvoline does, however, claim that its Max Life Synthetic 5W-30 product does meet VW 502.00. See this link to a PDF on Valvoline's web site:

      https://www.valvoline-technolo...ument

Note that the Max Life Synthetic 5W-30 has a higher viscosity 100 degrees C than the Synpower 5W-30, even though both are in the SAE 30 range.

      OK, Everybody read carefully:

The first post is a direct cut & paste from VW's list of 502.00 approved oils. I believe VW listed the most common 502.00 oils available in N.A.

I am sure it is not 100% complete. I revised my original post accordingly.

How can I check if Shell Rotella Synthetic is a VW 502.00 oil?

      Jesse,
The 5W 40 Shell Rotella Synthetic is fairly new, so it won't be on the list. It's good enough for me...bought two containers of it at WalMart last week.

It's been around for a while actually. It, along with Delvac-1 and Mobil 1 5W40 "Truck/SUV Formula" (which are the same thing) don't carry the 502 rating officially, but I'm quite sure they'd meet it if tested. They definitely meet the viscosity/HTHS requirements by a wide margin.

It's not on the list from VW:

      http://www.vw.com/SP/pdf/oilchart.pdf

Regardless of what a manufacturer puts on their bottle, if the oil is not on this list, I wouldn't put it in a car that's still under warranty.

This is not to say that Amsoil or any other top shelf synthetic oil isn't good, I'm sure they're as great as everybody who sells them says they are.

Unfortunately, VW's 502.00 approved list doesn't say Amsoil, etc. are great oils, & if your car is under warranty, VW has the last word.
