Depends on the other ends connection speed and bandwidth filters . Hell yes it goes faster than that ! And even faster if the file is in your ISP's cache !

rough calculation that there's 8 bits in a byte
512000 bits per second divided by 8 = 64000 bytes per second.
Now, as an example, when was the last time you saw a 10megabit ethernet connection transfer more than 7-8 megabits per second? Theoretical limits on ethernet connections are never reached.
I don't think that 50kilobytes per second is that bad for a 512kbps connection. You might get a little more out of it, but not much?
Langers, what's the most speed you've seen?
Oh, and check out http://www.easynews.com/slow/slow.html and the 'Network Trace Utility' mentioned in the first or second paragraph. You can, from there, re-route your connection through a bunch of their providers, which can sometimes help.
And just to boast, at home this morning I had a download from easynews that sat on 750-800kiloBYTES per second

Tim, as shown above, I did a bandwidth test and got 390 kilobits per second. /8 = 50K. Guess that is about right, although it still feels damn slow!!

Just to compare how useful that speed test site really is, here's what I just got, on the same connection that gets 700kB/sec from easynews
423.7 kilobits per second
Communications 423.7 kilobits per second
Storage 51.7 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 19.8 seconds
Subjective rating Not bad
The download comes from NYC - hardly an effective way of ascertaining the bandwidth available on your Sydney ADSL connection. I guess it does provide a "real world" scenario though.
Oh, Langers, are you using a download acceleator (I recommend Flashget) when you download from easynews... or anywhere for that matter?

For my part, that is precisely the kind of clip I want to see posted in this thread. It was brilliant.
How was it when he nearly lost it before the carousel? Clearly you have to have lightening fast reactions to be a driver of that calibre. Most impressive.
Interestingly, he seemed to be working much harder than Derek Bell in his 956 Porsche, but prolly not going as fast. Very different vehicles of course.
Thanks again Todd.

Strange, yours is a fair bit faster.
Not using a download accelerator, but I am using ReGet Junior as a download manager.

I have cable, which as you can see from my easynews download speeds can go much faster than a 512k DSL connection, yet our results in the speed test weren't that different! (illustrates my point, that website wasn't a very good test)
An do yourself a favour and get the latest version of flashget, and use it. Lots of cool features and makes life easy

I got between 150 and 500kb/sec after hitting it 10 or so times
Click refresh on that site a bunch of times and watch the results. As you can see, there are a lot of variables in the internet - one test like this isn't really an authoritative measure of how good your internet connection is

Ok Timmeh I need your help...downloaded that Clarkson video, extracted it, dearchived it, and when it opened Media Player, it said "unknown error encountered". I'm running the latest version of Windows Media Player, and no updates are available.
Any ideas?

ditto - the thread is going off topic, lets clean it up and post video clips of cars not testing broadband speeds and the sort

Lots of Top Gear Car reviews.
Note: Only works with IE.
For a real surprise, watch the V10 Touareg review. Clarkson hates it! And then thinks that the Phaeton is fantastic (which it is) and tremendous value for money (which belies its poor sales). That man can really pick a winner.

This is another absolute corker that I dug up from a while back, highlights are:
1) THE NOISE THE NOISE
2) How ambitious the driver is in terms of car placement

Faaaaaark! The way it finished was brilliant. It looks like he just got pole position for the 24 hour. He goes past GT Porsches like they are standing still!
I agree Tim, that's one hell of a clip.
I'm going to get to the Nurburgring 24 hour one day. That's a promise. Wanna go?

That was most impressive although he did jump a kerb that would have killed a racecar. Imagine having written graffiti on the ring only to see it immortalised in playstation?
