Thread: Jetta REVS by Itself. HELP!!!

    1. 01-09-2005 06:01 AM #1
I have a Jetta 2.0 and just recently the engine has started to rev by itself. The car won't be in gear and I won't be pressing the gas but for some reason I see and hear the RPMs rise. It's only happended a few times...i just took the car out of gear and let it rev down on its own. Does anyone know why this is happening? Damn car burns oil too but that's old news

how much are the revs rising?

    8. 01-09-2005 01:24 PM #8
If it is the MAF sensor.. I called VWOA and they told me that the warrenty on it has been extended to 12 years unlimited miles... so a dealership should be able to take care of that for you..

Yea the problem with that is that IF they determine it's the MAF you'll get a new one, if not you'll get a $125 diagnostics bill.

REALLY? I thought it was 70,000 miles. Will this apply to me if I bought it used from non-vw dealership? Can I just take it to any VW dealer? That would rock, cause at 75K, I'm sure mine will go at some point?

Really I did not know that the MAF sensor got extended to 12 years with unlimited miles. Did they send out a mailing? How did you find out?

    12. 01-11-2005 03:34 AM #12
It rises up to about 2500 rpm

What would happen if your MAF sensor died out while you were driving?

Not sure. But your car would be acting up long before that and youd notice SOMETHING was wrong, then eventually (hopefully) figure ou it's the MAF sensor and get it fixed before that'd happen. I sure wouldn't want that happening to me.

nothing would happen. Mine has gone bad before. I dorve around with it like that for over a year. Basically, it'll screw up your gas consumption ratio. The car will either use too much or too little fuel.

I'm betting MAF as well, I dont have a 2.0 but mine was doing the same thing and my intake has already been cleaned out. Some other indications are a CEL or on my display thingy in the middle of the gauge cluster, it will tell me to take it to the "emissions workshop".
      Good Luck

I think is your alternator going my was doing the same thing the RPM would rise by it self it was doing that for few days and then finally the battery ran out becouse nothing was charging it ...... and the car wont start so i checked the alternator and it was dead ..........changed that and everything is fine now .................alternators are expensive at the dealer you can rebuild yours for under $100 bucks or you can find a used one for cheap
