Thread: The Autocross Information Thread

by the book you have to have the stock programming to run stock class, however it is unlikely that anyone will care if you run GIAC's flashloader interpretation of the "stock" calibration. Your going to get beat by the Mini Cooper S anyways. If i were you I would run the flashloader stock program and just not tell anybody that you are or were ever chipped.

One note I would like to add.

The first class that allows you to change your steering wheel if your car came equipped with an airbag is street prepared.

If your car came equipped with an air bag you can not put an after market in and run in street touring.

Slowly growing too old to worry about going fast.

Hopefully this will be an easier question than some of the others.

I used to race my 94 Jetta in the FSP classification but my 07 Rabbit is listed in H class stock. Right now it is stock, and I can't find the Rabbit listed anywhere else in the classivication pages.

I would assume that in a couple months, after my upgrades I would fall back into the FSP, even though the Rabbit is not an F class stock car? There is no HSP classification, and don't want to look like a complete fool walking out there and not knowing where to race.

I am also tempted to go ahead and start competing in the FSP class to get prepared for when I will actully become competitive.

Thanks for any help, this thread has been very helpfull so far.

It depends on what you plan to do to the car. You may be able to just run STS. And yes, you would probably be in FSP.

Bold classes are classes that are applicable to VW.
Audi folks already know where they belong.

    Levels of prep:
Stock -=> Street Touring -=> Street Prepared -=> Prepared -=> Modified

Stock: SS AS BS CS DS ES FS GS HS
    Touring: STS, STX, STU
Street Prepared: ASP BSP CSP DSP ESP FSP
Prepared: AP BP CP DP EP FP

Clarification: You do not add a "Street Prepared" to your stock class if you want to move up to a Street Prepared class.

An HStock car cannot go to "H Street Prepared" since there is not such thing.
It is your responsibility to find and properly class your car.

hi guys, joseph here...i own a 93 eunos roadster that i have started using for autocross early 2007.still quite new in this sport.i'm from the philippines by the way where the local autocross and slalom events are filled with old toyota starlets

  7. 12-12-2007 06:21 PM #42
So you are in Manila huh? I thought just driving on the streets there was like a daily AutoX from what I have heard LOL. My GF is from Cebu, then Davao.

Back in the 80's I worked for Toyota dealers for many years. I remember getting the Toyota Motorsport magazines back then. It was mostly rally coverage, but I always remember in the back with the road racing section were always a lot of pictures of Starlets racing in Asia. But those Starlets were way different than the onese sold here in the USA. And I would imagine with TRD support for them, and not much for you from VW, you have your work cut out for you to be competitive. Well good luck, and Malagayan Pasko!

As for the list of classes up above, I am not too sure what is meant by 1K or 1J??? I have a 2006 GTI, but it is an early made MKV GTI with the DSG trans and 2.0T. But from trying to read your desription, I am confused where I would be placed = GS or HS?

And yes, I am an old timer at AutoX (since 74), but I have been away from the sport for over a year now since I moved to a different state, so lost track of what class I would be in currently. Got back into playing paintball more these days

  8. 12-13-2007 08:58 AM #43
driving in manila is such a bore because the traffic has worsened over the years...i got my miata from davao...the starlet's here really do have the TRD support they need...there is an abundance of twinside carb engines...well my miata still has a stock engine.i just play around with the suspension. right now i have bilstein shocks and RS*R springs because my miata is also daily driven and with the road conditions here,it's as if i'm riding with no shock absorbers at all!LOL

The swapped engine alone puts in SM. I'd be worried if you didn't have a turbo, as it could give you the chance to be competitive.

    They will be fine.
Will they be as fast as Hoosiers or Kumhos? no, probably not, but it depends on your competition and the size of the SM class in your area.

I've got a 91 GTi with ABA swap and cam upgrade.
Am I correct that the cam change would put me into SM? I think I would get killed.

Maybe it would be better to run my 07 Passat 2.0T instead!

Any Auto X clubs in CT? I am interested in getting into this

    Thanks

Yes, I believe you can, and it will make for quite a competitive car if setup fully and properly. The 8v cars were a little lighter than the 16v's, and with the allowed mod's you can make to the motor in SP, you can easily get 135whp or more out of it. Of course, this means a full overhaul of the engine, boring it over to the allowed max, port matching the head 1" into the ports, porting the intake manifold/possibly building a short runner, running standalone, custom built header and 2.5" exhaust, etc... It will take some money to make it completely competitive nationally, but on a local level, just drop the 16v in with a header and exhaust and have fun.

I have a MKIV R32. I go to events to watch and am looking to start participating in the near future. Below is a list of mods I have, let me know what class you think they'll put me in. I'm going to get into it mostly for fun so I'm not too worried about what cars I'll be running against.

VF Stage 2 Superchager(not installed yet)
    HPA CVP Intake manifold
    EVOMS VFLOW Intake
    APR/B&B 2.5" cat back
034 Track density Engine and Trans mounts

    Koni 1150 Coilovers
    Neuspeed Rear Sway Bar 19mm
Neuspeed Adjustable Lower Rear Control Arms
Stock 18x7.5 wheels with all season tires (Looking for OZ Alleggerita's or Ultra's as summer wheel)

The Charger is in my garage so I was wondering what class I would be in with and without it.
    Thanks guys,
    Ryan

Thanks for the quick response man From what i've read, it looks like I might be SP without the charger, and SM with it.
I'm just wondering about where the intake manifold puts me. I didn't see much about that.

I think the intake manifold drops you into SM anyway, so you might as well install your supercharger. SP doesn't allow very many engine modifications.

I've got an 04.5 GLI thats chipped, 3" TBE with high flow cat, APR 93 tune, CAI, Forge DV but otherwise stock. One street tires what class would I run?

And If I was to put on some R compounds on another set of wheels (probably not the stock BBS's and probably 16") what would I be looking at?

I've got a 2003 GTI 2.8L and I need to know what Street Touring classification it falls under. I'm going to build the car to the limits of the class so I would like to know the slowest class is allowed in. It has less and 3.1L NA, rims 7.5 inches wide stock and tires are only 225mm wide so I think I can get away with STS. Am I correct?

How do I class my car? (SCCA and clubs that use SCCA rules)
For starters, take a look at a worksheet like this one:
    http://www.scca-milwaukee.org/...n.pdf

This will give you a basic idea of which class you go into: Stock, Street Touring, Street Prepared, Street Modified, Prepared, or Modified. The lists above are also good, but this chart will help quite a bit.

Then read the rules pertaining to that class. You can find the online rulebook here:
    http://www.scca.com/_filelibra...s.pdf

You may find that there are other items you have that are illegal for that class - or you might get some ideas on what to optimized to better yourself in a given class. For instance - you put on a rear swaybar and that's all you did. That puts you in Street Touring or Street Prepared. Well, those classes also allow camber adjusters, coilovers, etc. So you can take advantages of the rules in that class instead of trying to bump down into stock.

Lastly, refer to Appendix A of the rulebook. Find the class you are in (say, Street Prepared) and then look for your car. If you have, say - an RX8 you will find it listed under 'Class B'. So you are competing in B, Street Prepared. Or BSP for short.

Note: Stock class is NOT SLOW. It is relatively cheap, but that plus R compound tires make the class extremely competitive. I daresay that Street Touring is a generally slower class. Some regions may offer 'Street Tire' classes. These will allow you to run stock class rules with street tires (or SP, SM rules). Check with your region to find out what they do.

The link to the classification worksheet isn't working... the new address is

If you change from the original engine yes. Autox classes are mostly meant for stock cars that have different preparation levels. Generaly speaking, engine swaps yeild large increases in performance so they are eliminated from most classes to keep it fair.

That is not to say you cannot autox your car though, having it in a certain class will have no bearing on how fun it is to flog the crap out of your car!

I currently have a 98 passat sedan. Mild turbo swap. No suspension upgrades. Would I be able to just drive up and run?

Is there any other b5 guys running autocross that could give a beginner on which upgrades to make and which not to make.

I am assuming that I'd be in the street class and not prepared.
