Thread: Timing Belt Replacement Interval '98 Jetta 2.0

    1. 02-27-2005 02:46 PM #1
      Greetings all,

What's the consensus on a reasonable and prudent timing belt replacement interval on the 2.0 ABA engine? Owner's manual is silent, Bentley recommends inspection and possible replacement at 60k. A search of the archives here resulted in exactly one post, recommending a 60k replacement.

I have a '98 Jetta Wolfsburg 2.0 which just turned over 60k miles. Since a bunch of other service is due, and since 7 year old belts concern me, I figure I'd replace all the belts and hoses while I'm in there anyway.

I've done (too many) Chrysler 2.2/2.5/3.0 timing belts, I prefer to replace them on my schedule rather than theirs.

Admins: if this query would be better served in the 2.0 tech forum, please advise.

I change mine every 100,000 kms/60,000 miles. Make sure to change the serpentine belt, tensioner, cam seal and intermediate shaft seal while you're in there. Hope that helps.
