Thread: Article: Golf 2.0 FSI vs 2.0 TDI

  1. 04-01-2005 04:01 AM #1
This is a review from this month's WHEELS magazine (Australia), comparing the Golf 2.0 FSI auto to the 2.0 TDI DSG. Both are in our 'comfortline' spec, which is one step up from base model. I thought this might be useful for people trying to work out which engine to go for, as I was.

    *bump*

No one's interested? It is a good review, and I wouldn't imagine that many US magazines would have a comparison like this...

You aren't getting the 2.0 FSI? Which engines are you getting?

I was disappointed that VW Australia chose to give us the old 1.6L engine from the MkIV Golf, rather than the new 1.6 FSI they have in Europe.

    So we get:
    1.6 100hp
    1.9 TDI 103hp
    2.0 FSI 147hp
    2.0 TDI 138hp

    we get for the jetta

    2.5 inline 5 150 HP...just more tq. I think

    1.9 TDI 100HP

2.0 FSI turbo for GLI 200 HP

great article! thanks for posting njm...

i wish they'd do more articles like that here in north america... but as we all know, unfortunately diesels aren't as popular here... shame...

funny points though... first, the old VW Vanagon on the first page...

second... this little side bar: "Crude awakening"... ironic they mention Europe's love affair with diesels is driven mainly by economic reasons, yet here in the U.S., diesel's toughest opponents are the environmental regulations.... you'd think it would be the other way around...

awesome article though - makes it a tough choice... i'm sure the performance would be closer between the 2.0TDI and 2.0FSI if they BOTH had DSG, or BOTH had manuals (TDI had DSG, FSI had Tip)...

and surprising the FSI still managed acombined average (they drove in a lot of congested traffic according to the article) 7.7L/100km (about 31mpg u.s.) vs 6L/100km for the TDI (about 39mpg u.s.) ... and the TDI cost about $2500AUD more... (the article calculates an *8 year* delay before the TDI pays for itself) and that's with diesel being 2.3c/L cheaper...

from the article, sounds like gas vs diesel prices are more in line with what they are here in the U.S., ie. premium is sometimes more, sometimes less than diesel, but there isn't a huge gap... and when Australia goes to 50ppm from 500ppm sulphur in their diesel, price will increase... probably same thing that will happen here in the U.S./Canada...

tough choice although we don't get either over here... and who knows when at this point...

    we get 2.5 I5s and 1.9TDIs... no 2.0TDI or 2.0FSI non turbo

We don't have the Bora (Jetta) here yet, but I'd imagine we'd get similar engines to yours when it arrives.

Thanks for the article. After careful evaluation etc. etc I decided today to purchase the Golf Comfortline TDI 2Ltr with leather, sunroof and SatNav.

I was so impressed with the TDI because of a test drive I did between the TDI and the FSI that I went for the TDI.

Can't wait the 3 months before I get it

Some here are saying the 1.9 TDI in the US is now 105 hp, 188 lb-ft torque. Haven't seen it officially in print, though.

in Canada i hear we will be getting the Passat's old 2.0L 8v TDI 134hp instead of the aging 1.9L TDI 100hp
