Thread: mkII rear caliper parking brake seized, can I upgrade?

    OTOH, no matter how good a driver you are a car with too much brake bias on the rear will never stop as fast a car with correct brake bias. It's not only keeping the car straight, it's getting the maximum braking force from each tire. Keeping the rears from locking when there is too much rear brake bias simply means the fronts aren't supplying as much braking force as they could.

    I do get a kick out of the fact that, considering the condition of the brakes on the car you describe above, you probably are correct in repeatedly calling them "breaks!"

    i understand this as well thats why i am converting my front calipers too. aside from better braking i just thought about it. This upgrade would actually make the car handle a little better too due to less unsprung weight on the suspension. hmm cant belive nobody has mentioned that yet now all we need is a good pair of light weight rotors to complete this set up

    Thread inspired me and since I needed to replace my rear calipers anyway I'm going to give the mk4 upgrade a try. I picked up some good used calipers from Lakeview in Charlotte today and planning on ordering the braided hoses tomorrow. Wish me luck

    what hoses are you going to use to use for that? the stock scirocco hoses dont work.

    just a quick question. kind of a noobie question lol
    does anybody know if the a4 jetta vr6 calipers will bolt on to the corrado g60 carrier/bracket?
    i have a set of front calipers from the jetta but not sure if should just buy the carriers and bolt the calipers on or would i still need to get the complete g60 caliper. im kind of on a budget so if its a direct bolt on to the g60 carrier then i will go for that. if not oh well i guess ill save up for a bit.

    Ordered mine from http://www.germanautoparts.com/ came in today

    Dumb question...my newest VW is a MK3..anything special about how you compress mk4 calipers. Tried my trusty C clamp and got exceptional resistance decided to stop until I asked. Thanks!

    Fronts or Rears? (I get to ask dumb and/or even Rhetorical Questions. It's in the Rules...)

    Investigate "How to Do a Brake Job" on the donor car they go w/, esp the part about twisting them (the pistons) back in during the procedure.

    Rear Brake calipers (what entire thread is about.....) came from salvage yard and are sitting on bench so not really sure of the cosmic connection between them and the brake reservoir cap but willing to give it a shot

    less resistance will result by opening the reservoir cap while retracting the rear caliper pistons, not drastically less, but it helps. do this all the time with hondas. noticeable difference, just use some type of fine mesh filter on top of the reservoir so that foreign materials won't go in. any kitchen strainer big enough to fit the opening will do.

    make sure that you dont have to turn the piston while compressing it. on the mk4's you have to turn the piston clockwise while compressing it.

    your welcome.
    i just put some mk4 calipers on my scorocco and even with the caliper empty of brake fluid it was still hard to compress and turn at the same time. i used some needle nose pliers to turn the piston with the groves it has on there. a caliper piston tool kit would be great for these style calipers.

    Trust me, I do quite a lot of brakes, and for any car with rear discs a kit like this (or similar) is indispensable, forget any of the small cube tools or horsing around with pliers etc. I use this exact kit on many makes and models, works very well.
