Liked the way they played last night.

The interview with Cespedes was funny. Sounded like the first he heard about playing right field was from his translator.

Great story in the Globe about Dan Butler. All the way up from the Cape League to the Majors.

Jackie Bradley optioned to Pawtucket; Red Sox call up Mookie Betts.

Gold Glove defense, can't hit Major League pitching. Pretty sure he batted over .300 last time he was in Pawtucket.

Betts made a nice catch last night. Impressive for an infielder with virtually no time in center field. The Garrett Richards knee injury covering first was ugly. Not Joe Theismann ugly but you never want to see a player go down like that.

Reports: Red Sox To Sign Cuban OF Rusney Castillo For Seven Years, $72.5M
by Mike Cole on Fri, Aug 22, 2014 at 11:38AM

The Boston Red Sox appear to be getting their man. According to multiple reports, the Red Sox are close to signing Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo to a seven-year deal worth $72.5 million. The reported contract would be a record for a Cuban defector, surpassing the reported $68 million the Chicago White Sox gave Jose Abreu last fall.

It’s unclear what the Red Sox’s immediate future plans for Castillo are, but the 27-year-old has a chance to be a solid major leaguer. He’s not a tall guy at 5-foot-9, but at 185 pounds, he has a strong build.

Scouting reports indicate that Castillo’s speed is his best asset. That, along with a decent right-handed arm, could project him as a center fielder in the major leagues.

Castillo’s bat would be an interesting play at Fenway Park. According to Baseball America, Castillo — who hits right-handed — is more of a line-drive hitter. He’s displayed some pop at times, but he figures to be more of a doubles hitter. How that plays in a place like Fenway Park will be interesting to watch.

I turned off last night's game with two outs in the top of the 9th. I was when I saw the score this morning.

They're really bad. Bunch of .220 hitters with no pitching.

Has a team ever gone from last place to WS win and back to last place?

Don't think so. Miami went from 3rd in 1996 to WS Champions in 1997 to last in 1998.

      I didn't think so.

My first baseball game was a Mets - Pirates game in 1969. They won the WS that year. I just checked, and, to my surprise, they weren't in last place in 1968. The Astros were.

The Mets were also competitive for a few years after '69 and played in the WS again in '73.

What's also amazing is that the Sox are barely playing above Valentine's 2012 team: .439 to .426.

How did it go so bad so quick? The AL East standings are unrecognizable. I truly miss the late 90s and 00s. Such competitive play. So many good players. The rivalry was great.

The Yankees circumstances are different from the Red Sox. The problem the Yankees have is that other teams now have deep enough pockets that New York no longer has the ability to pick the best players out of the free agent market. From all those good years, they don't have any "can't miss" high first round draft choices in the farm system so they're not getting much help organically.

The Red Sox had a perfect alignment of the stars last year. They got career years, or at least better than average years, out of a lot of players and they had the miracle of Koji Uehara so any game where they had a lead in the 7th inning was pretty much an automatic win. This years team had somewhat less talent and underperformed to the same level that last year's team over performed. They took a big step backwards at center field and catcher. Gomes stopped getting clutch hits and reverted to what most thought he'd be when they signed him. Buchholz is making us forget about the Lackey bucket of chicken bad years though his last start was strong until a Grady Little manager move in the 9th leaving him in to load the bases followed by a blown save by Uehara.

The Sox could be good again soon given what they have for young players. I have no sense for what the Yankees are going to do since the free agent market has been so lousy recently.

A ton of young talent pushed to perform in the bigs just a bit too early. As well as the youngsters we've seen already, they still have one of the best farm systems.

They could easily return to contention next year with a few, solid free agent additions which must include starting pitching imo.

The Sox were pathetic last night. Betts was the only bat in the lineup hitting more than .260. Buchholz' line: 4 IP, 5 runs. Castillo got his first major league at bats and a hit that should have been an out. Napoli has Craig and Middlebrooks behind him in the lineup so he sees nothing to hit. Other than September two years ago when the team rolled over and quit, this is the worst I can remember since I became baseball-aware in 1967.

I agree it sucks now but the upside could pay our for years to come. A lot of young talent right on the cusp.

I just checked this morning. They have 69 wins, the same as the 2012 Valentine team, with 4 games left.
