We knew he would be gone, and that he would probably head to NY - but it still sucks

Meh - congrats to him. Ellsbury knows that baseball is business and I think none of us really expected the Sox to give him a 7 year deal - management has learned it's not a wise decision. Even though it's a business decision, at least he will have a chance to contribute to a team that can win. I feel for Salty who is making a business decision with the Marlins and will have to wallow in mediocrity for the next 3 years.

It's not the yearly pay. It's the years. He has an iffy injury history. He will likely look great for the next few years if he can avoid the DL. It is a big risk when he clears age 35.

Marlins will be better than many expect this year. They have one of the top 2-3 young pitchers in the NL, and a few more that look like they could come into their own. I think they're one more bat to protect Stanton away from being a NL East contender.

      With "advances in medicine"

I just use the wait and see approach. Many guys are performing well at 35 plus years old these days.

Ellsbury played in 72 games in 2012 and 18 games in 2010. In 6 seasons, he was on the DL for 3 of them. Ask ARod how those "advances in medicine" are going?

He played with Ortiz so I am sure he already knows.

From age 33-35 [3 seasons] Ortiz was about a .260 hitter.

      From age 36-38 [ 3 seasons] .315 hitter.

Just gotta find the right doctor

      But seriously

in 4 of 6 seasons Jacoby played 135 games or more and in 2 of those he played 150 plus.

In the past 6 seasons guys like Pedrioa, Ortiz, and Victorino have all had a season where they only played 50-90 games.

Is the difference between Ellsbury and those guys that they werent trucked by Beltre? Why did those guys miss so much time in a season?

And again just saying he was on the DL 3 times doesnt tell the whole story does it? Like I said in the Yankee thread. Granderson went on the DL twice last year that doesnt make him fragile. It means he got hit in the wrist with fastballs.

      Napoli re-signs 2 years/$16 per.

He turned down a more lucrative offer from Texas to stay in Boston.

That was the rumor but it appears the Sox were the only ones that actually made him an off [not that it make their offer a bad one[

As of this evening, it is still being reported he turned down a more lucrative offer to stay with Boston.

      From ESPN/Gordon Edes

Napoli, who also was vigorously pursued by the Texas Rangers, with whom he had played in 2011 and '12, and by the Seattle Mariners. At least one team offered Napoli a three-year deal, and there was at least one offer for a larger financial package than what he took from the Red Sox.

Without dollar figures we dont really know that the deal was better or even a real offer.

Atleast one team offered him a 3 year deal...How much money?

One team offered him a larger financial package.

What did he get 2/32 or something?

so if a team offered him 3/36 I would really call that a better deal but yeah its larger "financially"

Doesnt matter he is a perfect guy for that lineup [IMO] and for that city

I, for one, was hoping he'd leave the Sox. ...I bet Cano is upset that Seattle couldnt get him. Still no protection in that lineup for him now.

      It's been a quiet spring.

Only big news was the Marlins being upset at the Sox for sending essentially a minor league lineup for a spring training game which they charged higher prices for tickets.

The Florida Marlins lost 100 games last year. They do that to their fans every game.

Just wanted to say that the Sox new "variable pricing" (which the Pats also introduced for this year) is ridiculous. Green Monster seats for a Yankee game on a WEDNESDAY? $600/ea. Plus a $9/ticket fee. Plus a $7 transaction fee. I'm sure someone will pay, but not me.

Home opener is April 4th. I have 4 feet of snow pack in my yard and temperatures are 20 degrees below normal.

I went online last Tuesday to try to get some early season standing room monster seat section tickets that went on sale at noon. Tried right at noon and a "tickets unavailable" message came up and immediately directed me to $190 seats. No thanks.

Yup... been a long winter. However, when I was in Salem, MA last week everything was clear and dry, the only places little snow piles were hanging on was deep under plants. I'm sure Boston is the same.

      New contract for Ortiz...

David Ortiz and the Boston Red Sox have agreed to a one-year contract extension through the 2015 season with a club/vesting option for 2016 and a club option for 2017, the team announced Sunday night. “With this agreement, we have near certainty that David Ortiz will finish his career in a Red Sox uniform, which is something we have all wanted and that we are all proud of,” said Principal Owner John Henry. “It is difficult to describe David’s contributions to our city both on the field and off the field, and we are so proud to have this ambassador of our game with us as he continues on this road to Cooperstown.” The extension, which was first reported by ESPN.com’s Gordon Edes, will add a year to the two-year, $30 million (after incentives) deal Ortiz signed with the Red Sox last offseason. Ortiz will earn $16 million in 2015 under the extension, a source told WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford.

Did you read his dumbass quote? Something about this removes the stress he's under. $112,000,000 in career earnings according to baseball-reference.com, and he's stressed?

Turned on the game and the first pitch I saw was the HR in the bottom of the 7th.

Just read that the Sox have highest average ticket price, and a 12-ounce beer is $7.75.

Flipped the Patriots Day game on. 0-0 top of the third. 20 minutes later, Buchholz is in the clubhouse taking a shower, 6-0 Baltimore, 1 out. Time to flip it off and go back to work.
