Thread: Mods for Mk3 keyless alarm system- trunk opener!

1. 06-02-2005 11:11 PM #1
In another thread I described a mod for the KES receiver antenna to try to get better range for the remote.
http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2019158 I hope this will help those of you that have to lean across the fender to make it work.
The other mod that I made to the system was to get the trunk opener button working. WHAT?!?! YES! IT IS POSSIBLE! The credit goes to someone else. I read about making the trunk release work at this site: http://matndahat.dhs.org/jetta/rke_trunk.htm Sadly, this will only work on B4 sedans that have the trunk release button under the console armrest. B3's and B4 wagons do not have the trunk release "motor".
I read it and checked out the theory of the wiring on my car and decided it was sound, so I made my own little relay harness and hooked it up. It works great. I mounted the module to the upper screw hole from the original module.

Then I mounted the relay to the lower hole. The wires had to face forward to clear the harness plugs from the module.

The wire bundle for the trunk release button can be found under the door sill plate where they turn to go to the console.

I ran wires from the relay along under the sill to this spot and plugged them into those wires.

Then it all tucks in tight underneath the other wires. No need to pull the console if you iknow which wires you need!

The wire bundle has a red, a red with white, and a couple of brown wires. With respect to the wiring diagram that is linked to in that procedure:
You tap into the red wire and connect this wire to pin 87 of a typical 5-pin SPDT relay (like Parts Express sells). You then CUT the red/white wire. You connect the end that goes to the trunk button to pin 87a. The end that goes to the trunk connects to pin 30.
The other two terminals of the relay are connected inside the dash. As the procedure says, you must CUT the wire going to pin 1 of the 10-pin connector on the module. You tape over the wire harness end and connect the module end of the wire to pin 86 of the relay. Then you run a ground wire from pin 85 to the round ground bus connector that is just behind the module on the left. A standard 1/4" female tab connector will plug right in.
Instead of CUTTING that wire to pin 1 of the module, I was able to back the terminal out of the plug in case I ever need to plug it back in. I put a new terminal on the wire that goes to the relay.

As usual, we're getting only the great stuff from A2B4guy!
Btw, what I'm going to make is the remote electrical trunk release for my B3 Wagon... Sounds good? Expect another nice DIY in the near future...

Good job Jeff!
I've been wanting to do this to my B4 Wagon. But, I'll have to install some sort of popper, and alot more wire.
Or, if I can come up with something else cool to use that extra channel for....

Remote start?
Door poppers and actuators here: http://www.spalusa.com/html/dampframe.htm There's a guy on ebay that sells a lot of that stuff.

hmm... Maybe.....

When you pop your trunk, does it set off your alarm?

No! This is an actual intended function of the module, so it knows what's going on. You're using the button that has a trunk lid picture on it, and the module wire is labeled "T". After you close the trunk, you can see the red led change to indicate that it is armed again.

Awesome! I hope it works like that on the wagons too.

It will if you wire it up! I doubt the wagon has the trunk opener wiring in it.
