i put 3, 8 oz fishing wieghts on where the neuspeed shift weight goes.
today i realized that my car will always be driven with at least 3 things wrong with it all the time. im just waiting for the day i can drive down the road and not here any weird/new noises or feel some kinda vibration
finished the rewiring of the starter, only to have the car die 2 blocks from the house and get pushed home to find a **** battery, bought it and some new main wiring for the 8v. now only if itll run for a while again without problems-
Unfortunatly as of august 30th 2005 my 1987 VW GTI with a 1.8l 16v DOHC was involved in a wreck.
The impact was my left headlight to the other car's left headlight at a total speed of about 55mph. I was going about 10mph and making a left turn and didnt see the opposing car because of a blind corner/hill. He was going about 45-50, or at least thats what the cop "estimated" his speed to be. I was cited for making a dangerous left turn...
I have a few reasons to believe that i am not at fault. First of all i never have a hard time explaining the intersection to my neigbors and peers because it's a "known" intersection for being a dangerous one. Second, a witness told me that he had seen the vehicle speeding down a street just prior to the incident. Third, the tow truck driver that showed up to the sceene of the accident to take my car away, and later bring back to my house, told me that because of the spread and the layout of the wreck he believed that i wasnt at fault and that he would testify on my side if i decided to fight the citation.
Luckly neither the other driver, nor my friend and myself were injured beyond brusing because of out seatbelts (Hail VW engineering!). Unfortuniatly the real victim of this event was my car.
My 1987 1.8 16v DOHC GTI was rather stumbled upon by accident. I had responded to an ad for a 87 golf for $1500 and ended up paying $1300 and the cost of a new clutch ($400). My main goal had been to find a little economical car which i could drive around while i restored my '65 Mustang. After driving The Stang for a while i was amazingly appriciative of the luxuries such as power steering, air conditioning, comfy seats, a manual transmission, and windows that actually rolled down. After purchasing the car i instantly fell in love with ... almost, everything about it. There were a few minor flaws including an inoperative speedometer, unpredictable windshield wiper function, and this little weird ball thing in the shifting linkage. (I hear its a known problem.) In spite of theese imperfections i loved the balence of user-friendliness and road hugging power. The Stang was instantly garaged and somewhat forgoten about as i readily dumped as much money as i could spare from living expenses and snowboarding into my GTI.
In the beginning it was basically maintenece such as replacing a clutch, shift linkage, a few engine mounts and some oddball oil sensor which insisted on emiting a massivly annoying buzzing sound whenever my RPMs dropped below 2000. After a period of about 2 years, and a lot of driving without a speedometer, I finnaly had an "oppertunity" to replace the stock exhaust with a new Bosal header and Techtonics cat-back exhaust. And then came coil over suspension and even new taillights. Also a new transaxel; Reverse doughnuts are much funfor you, not for your transmission! This was about 2 months before the accident.
Now if you've read this far i imagine you've expierenced the same kind of happiness you only get from driving a VW. And maybe this story has a point to it?
I believe the engine is still good in my car along with the exhaust and possibly the transmission and suspension. What would be my best options for car which might accept my 1.8 16v and transmission, suspension, exhaust, ect.?

i put these on today.. some new longbeaches for the gti..
but i had to swap to 5 lug to do it.. that went pretty smooth. rides nice too.. next thing is a new motor.. thinkin vr ..
sorry for the blurry pic..
Well heres my golf from the side
Wish I had my camera.. I could take a picture of my driver side headlight. Water has collected in it, up the bulb almost. lol. Of course Im about to just replace it but I was thinking hey there's enough room for a gold fish in there!! What the hell, right? But anyway today I ordered a badgeless grill to ditch the two high beam headlights. I think the 2 rounds look really good and not a lot of people have them around here in seattle so Ive noticed. Weee
This morning I woke up early and rethreaded my stripped bilstein shock and reassembled everything. Took it for a test drive and I'm happy, I was pricing new shocks cause I didn't think it would rethread right. Seemed hard last night in the dark..lol
I had to run out and buy a die and tap kit last night at Sears. The damn circlip was up in the spring seat, and everything was siezed. I had to hacksaw the nut off, and then I had a heck of a time with the metal cylinder that goes inside the lower bushing, it was siezed up cause a part of the circlip actually got up in it somehow.
hehehe that is nuts, that all this would have been prevented, had I put the washer on top of the circlip like I was supposed too. I remember now looking at the shocks in there, that's how they were put together.
Helps to save parts you are replacing for reference, sometimes you just get confused with the variations in diagrams. The dealers don't match the bentley, and none of them match the bilstein refrences, and none of those match the upper bushing kit diagrams. It's crazy !!!
Live, learn, then get dove..hehehe
I took a good look @ it and hopped to get more money(either working or stilling a bank) to do a few more things to it!!
Then drove to work where I am right now!!
I finally got around to swapping my auto-adjust clutch cable out for a manual-adjust version, tightened down my water pump pulley because it was being a bitch and backing one of its bolts out, and took the wheels off to attempt to start the process of replacing the front struts. My Jetta will finally have some decent, non-worn out knees.
