^Good advice. The upper rears should be easy - just need 17mm stuff. For the recessed nut I have a socket grooved (via Dremel) and clamp it w/ vice-grips. Might need some fine-nose vice-grips for the top tab in the rears to get the nut loose.

PB blaster is your friend. Don't settle for WD40 (useless stuff..).

In the front, do the upper nut first (set it in place, and thread down to the lock portion) this should leave the assembly hanging. Attach the knuckles, wheels, lower the car. The top piston is now as high as it's gonna be through the upper strut mount, so stick the plate on, and carefully tighten the nut (22mm) - the central allen key should be 5mm or 6mm (to prevent the strut piston from spinning; spinning it will destroy the valving inside).

Try checking to make sure your not sucking air anywhere in your intake boot, sounds like your taking in air near your TB, I had that same problem, the plastic elbow on the boot was cracked and taking in air and giving that cammed rumble sound, it was an OBD-1 ABA as well.

Just curious because the PO of my car told me the ISV is bad on my car, and it idles like it has a big cam in it, so I'm curious to if replacing it will actually solve the problem or if I'm going to have to figure it out from there.

Its an ABA obd1 swap if that changes anything.
Well a faulty but still functioning ISV can cause a whole bunch of idle problems; loping idle, sporadic revving at idle, really high idle, etc. Mine just didn't work at all, and my car would basically start up like it was carbureted and had no choke. I'd have to hold the rpms up around 1k-1200 on cold starts until it warmed up enough to idle properly. After that, it would idle perfectly fine albeit a little low at times. If you can find a cheap ISV in a junk yard or on here, it's definitely worth checking out.

Mine's a digi II 1.8, but the ISV still does pretty much the same thing.

Chickened out and didn't drive it to school today, and now I'm sitting in class wondering why the front left side seems to undulate up and down. Scary.

Picked up 10.1/11" spindles for 11" / Girling 60 upgrade, also got a Mk3 subframe and control arms, and a rear beam w/ torsion bar (base model).

11" slotted rotors, dual piston calipers, w/ 8.9" slotted rears w/ mk4 Al calipers should haul a 2200lb car down pretty nicely.

Oh and received the 215/35r17's for my RPF-1's. Damn these have hardly any sidewall... But if I can fit them.. then methinks it's time for some 17x8+ wheels.

Did you buy the parts online?

If you did, would you mind PMing me the links to where? I've got the same set up and when it comes time for brakes I want to be absolutely sure I'm buying the correct parts instead of just guessing based on something I read.

Sorry I keep posting off topic, you guys just keep posting things related to questions I have haha.

went to get inspected, failed lucky that its just a tierod end, a ball joint and a wheel bearing. im just going to do both ball joints, drop the knuckles off at the shop to have the bearings pressed in, and do the one tie rod end for now.

really not that bad though considering it hasnt been on the road for over a year and half

did you expect anything less to happen when you have a unsecured panel with massive surface area sitting on the front of the car with a huge air tunnel running under it?

I was thinking the same thing...or take the wheel off and take it to a tire shop and have them throw it on the balancer to see if it might be the wheel or tire.

    Hit any massive potholes lately?

found out my new wheels won't arrive until the end of may. Boooo I need them before a show this month. Ordered them in the middle of april from tuner shop

  33. 05-05-2012 12:00 AM #22434
Been contemplating this for a couple of years, finally spent a couple hours in the garage trying it out. Happy cinco de mayo:

1 down, 3 to go! That first one still needs some touch up here and there, but the hard part is done

  34. 05-05-2012 12:07 AM #22435
FYI, they were originally all black. I stripped the powder coat off the now exposed outer ring, if you want to call it that, primarily with a die grinder. I took a spare knuckle with bearing and hub installed, and clamped it in my bench-mounted vise. This let me position the wheel horizontally or vertically, depending on the surface I was working on, and it let me spin the wheel so I could work more quickly on it.

Kind of a pain in the ass, but I like the outcome.
