What you need before you start:
small flat head screwdriver, or small knife, and a CR2032 battery (available at most auto parts stores, radio shacks, walmarts etc... $4)
Step 1 have your key with the VW logo facing up
Step 2 insert small screwdriver (or swiss army knife) into slot between key and transmitter (part with the buttons) [I find it easiest to use the knife as a lever to help seperate them)
Step 3 pull apart key and transmitter
Step 4 seperate the two halves of the transmitter. You should be able to do this with your thumb and forefinger
Step 5 dislodge battery
Step 6 re-insert battery (+ goes down) and push remote back together
Oh, yeah i see the keychain and the knife. BTW how were trhe results of the self replacment? Is that written somewhere like in the manuel or online at vw? Also was there any marks that u will get from that, thats like unavoidable?
Dude, this is perfect timing. It appears that my battery died yesterday.
One question: Do I have to use a Drivers Wanted knife to open the key? LOL
Thanks for the nice write-up.
HA! Just what i needed, thanks man, you saved me buying a new set of keys, the dealership told me i had to replace the whole unit, which 1 something bucks!
By the way items you dont have:
1) Driver wanted mini keyring maglite
2) Little keyring R32 suspension (coilover)
3)......someone can add to this
thanks again yo

I have the coil over LED light I also have a mini mag light (ground score at a dead show parking lot), neither of which have room to reside on my keys... if I didn't use the knife so often I woulda taken it off as well.
and yes I called them flair in refrence to Office space... love that flick...
If they move my desk again I am going to set the building on fire

If you do not use a VW approved tool it voids your warranty... </sarcasm>
for those of you who are worried about using the knife to open:
you dont need any tools to open the key! all you need to do is:
1.flip out the key.
2.hold the key with the key recess up.
3. put your thumbs on the bottom and forefingers on top.
4.then simply "break" the two in half with an upward motion of your thumbs.
no marks. or chance of marks!!!
ok so good information BUT since i ran over my WHOLE KEY FOB with the lawnmower(i know, i know) i need to replace the key part as well. how do i get out the flip part so i can insert a new square key that i bought off ebay??? please let me know. can you believe that those **** at the VW dealer in montgomery told me that they dont even cut keys there! which is lies bc i had a key cut there liek 6 months ago for $100(arg) and so then they said well the machine is broken so you have to have it specially ordered and cut from the VW people. (i.e. $200+ yeah right!) so if you guys have any other input on what i could do i would really appreciate it. know anyone in montgomery, AL????!!??
looks pretty good mang....any idea how much the new battery woudl cost?? idk if its just my key or my battery is low or what, but i find myself pushin it a real lot of times even when im close and it doesnt work....anyone else feel that?
