P.S. Mythbusters this week, 9 PM Wednesday. They're building a waterjet powered car. Mk2 Golf is the platform.

just wanted to throw this out there...
on my trip to alabama, car fully loaded down, i got 33.32 mpg.
tail end of that trip + since then has netted 55.77 mpg
      pretty damn pleased/surprised.
but then i realized i do a lot of hypermiling automatically. i draft on the tractor trailers. and recall, please, the debate over whether it's better to go windows down or use AC? well, on my trip, i used option C, windows up/no AC! haha, so there's that... plus i'm an easy driver, never accel. to reds/yellows, etc.
sorta in disbelief over the 55 figure, but i'll have to set up an excel spreadsheet and see how things go in the future.
      take care, everyone.

nice man...but windows up with no ac in this weather, why?
When I came back to va from myrtle beach, I was getting ~35 to 40 mpg, sometimes higher, and I was rolling....

Well I found out what was on my tires....
shock oil. my front left shock is blown. the shock piston moves around in the shock tube and there is oil all over it and the casing. wtf. If it isn't one thing it is something else.... WTH! I am getting in touch w/ the original owner to see when they bought them. supposedly they are not even 1&1/2 yrs old.

      I just can't win.

haha... due to my history/habits, i've always been more of a warm-weather person. there's a battle b/w my roommates and i over the thermostat - i want it on 85, they want it on 70. we've compromised on a chilly 76.

No hot dipping here. Went to the junkyard today and snagged another head. Looking at it compared to my current one, just doesn't seem to be in as good of shape as what I already had. Looks like I'll probably be taking it to a machine shop now to have them pressure test it for leaks. I'm banking on it just being a bad gasket, and before you ask, yes I used new bolts, and yes I followed the proper torque sequence.

      hot/pressure test it. Be smart.
Better replace a bunch of other crap on that engine before you put it in. Hind sight is 20/20.

I'll get it pressure tested, that's why I'll be going to a machine shop, but I see no need in having the thing dipped. Not trying to spend alot of money on it, just want peace of mind.

If you are going for peace of mind then. Water pump? ALL Water hoses and pipes? Thermostat? New vac lines? New belts and tensioners? New timing belt now?
since you are taking the head off why not some new cams?

A cam on an 8v is just a waste of money. New waterpump, t-stat, belts, tensioner. No new hoses since what I'm working with is just fine. I would throw the head back on, but since I already had issues once I want to eliminate the head out of the equation.

Yeah. We needed you two to take the pressure off of Ruckus. He kept strafing the LZ from the wicked case of nerves he had from your absences.
