It doesn't make sense that they up a plain jane automatic in the 3.6L.

Your talking VW here...when has not making sense ever stopped them in the past?

This new 3.6l VR6 model will only be sold in the U.S. market B6 Passat initially (Germany will get a 250hp 3.2l VR6 FSI) and will be available only with a six-speed tiptronic in either front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive configurations

    Visit the frontpage more often...

    http://www.vwvortex.com/artman...shtml

I expect this to change when the R36 arrives, as that one will definately get the DSG tranny, and should also get a manual tranny...

I think I read somewhere here that the "auto" on the passat was Tip not DSG, I believe the reason for that is DSG can at times not be as smooth as a regular tip, for example, Ive learned that I'll roll back on a small speedbump with DSG, other automatics Ive driven dont do that.

No one answered my question though, is SMS chipping MK5s yet?

your right, DSG sorta... feels like a manual tranny at times, when u let off
the brake, they roll slower, and sometimes not at all, its weird sometimes
cause every auto as soon as u let off the brake, they start moving, 2-5 mph.

    DSG doesn't do that

Well, what if the front page says it is Tip? The official spec sheet doesnt mention Tip for the 3.6L Passat, it just says "automatic". In the same spec sheet, it does say "Tip" as an option for other trim levels. Maybe VW is undecied as to what to put there? And you are right. If they give us a non stick shift option in the R36, it is gotta be DSG. So we are back to square one: the DSG should be at least able to handle 265lb-ft, say a GLI with catback and chip.

apr is claiming like 300 lb/tq

that amounts to prolly 270 w torque?

on a DSG GLI, and they say it CAN handle it.

thats why i brought it up. but since you got two clutches, i wonder if they [vw] made it so that they're two good ones or 2 just good enough to get the transmissions sold cheaper. meh?

I think as mentioned before, APR reprograms engine management and the DSG as well. The way the transmission works, there shouldn't be the amount of slippage that occurs with a manual tranny because the computer is handling the clutch(es) engagement not the driver...the only real place where significant damage can occur is on repeated hard launches (where the computer allows some slippage at a pre determined RPM) ...Launch control is disabled for the US...although I'm sure APR can re-enable it, I'm prety sure the can program first gear to be less intense...

    Laz,

I think I read somewhere on the mk5 or 2.0T forum that launch control is a bit more than just unlocking the feature and that there was some additional hardware required for this feature. I could be wrong though.
