why would you wanna unlock your car 100ft away. Same S#$% 10ft or 100ft.

if you in a parking lot and forgot where you parked (happens to me all the time) you set off the panic button and bam there it is...
    nice write up

I just did this mod, when i hit the lock button though no beep anymore not sure whats wrong could be multiple things

  4. 01-30-2006 02:34 PM #144
mine used to be so bad, that sometimes if i were in the right position, i seriously couldnt open the trunk... from the trunk.

so yeah this was definitly a worthy mod that works very well.

just be sure you use wire strippers, dont use scissors like i did (ended up cutting the thin clear copper wire like twice) but still managed to save it =p

Sounds good. A few questions before I do this though.
Does the horn signal stop working for everyone or just if you do it wrong?
Has anyone hooked the new antennae wire up to the radio antennae?
Is there a cleaner way to run the new antennae wire out to the a-pillar than by running it out the fusebox cover and leaving the fusebox open?
Where does the other end of the old antennae wire lead?

Just did the mod this weekend and its sweet as hell. It serves no purpose really, but i can unlock my car from 50ft further away now. HIYO!!!

just like a few others on here have said...all i gotta do is hold my keys to my chin and the alarm will turn on/off from really far away....

  9. 02-02-2006 12:20 AM #149
I did it and it's pretty cool, except now my car doesn't turn off when it's supposed to. It runs even with the key out of the ignition.

This is a great DIY - I'll have to do it when I have some time with the car...

    I'm curious -
1.Has everyone's horn stopped beeping after making this mod?
2.Can you just pull out the backside of the old antenna (so it's not hanging loose)?
3.Can you run the wire down along the floor board and up the B-Pillar instead (with similar results)?
4.Did you confirm which wire was the keyless remote through the Bentley, or was it labeled on the fusebox, and you just trace it to the connector?

    Thanks!

i have a question...are you gonna see that gay as wire in your door jamb sticking out after this mod is completed or can you completely hide it?

  15. 02-09-2006 12:05 PM #155
my gli doesn't beep anymore either. It stopped beeping months ago all by itself without this mod and ya wanna know what...its cooler that way!

Im doing this mod in exactly....9 hours. And as for the lock not beeping, I had this problem and had mechanics looking all over for the answer (each door, the hatch, on diagnostics) turned out to be my hood....my freekin hood

Now, lets say you took the end of the newly-added antenna and stripped of some of the wire, and lets just envision taking that wire and sodering it to a part of the inner-roof metal. Would'nt that turn the whole roof panel into a satellite of sorts?

I just finished this DIY, and it get ass!...

werid thing about my harness under dash though. There was a wire that started with a black sheath, but about an inch up the antenna wire it was exposed.....any ideas?

would this mod have the same wiring colors and all in a 2001 jetta vr6...?

  20. 03-12-2006 08:55 PM #161
i just did this today in my 2002 jetta and its the same setup, and my horn still beeps. but in the jettas its the black wire clip, not the beige one.

...Why not ground it to the frame? Would that not work extremely well?

Just thought I would add that the distance greatly varies with the battery life in your remote.

When I had a fresh battery in my remote, I was able to "contact" my GTI up to 100ft away. Now, I have to use the chin trick to get that type of distance again.

    Anyways, hope you guys enjoy

This mod is sweet for anyone with the alientech window opener/closer. being able to get your windows open before you get to your car instead of having them still rolling down when you are already sitting in the car makes it all worth it.

edit: I did the insall a little different, instead of cutting the wire and using a butt connector I used one of those 3m "no cut" connectors so I was able to leave the original antenna wire intact while adding on the extra antenna. I dont know if this makes a difference but my car still beeps when you lock it.

in all honesty you dont have to put it up to your chin... just point it at your body... and it still uses your body as a much larger antenna allowing you to unlock your car from a farther distance... just be facing your car when you do it and it will work... and that way you dont look wierd with your FOB on your chin!

    Legend...

    Wait for it....

    Dary!

    Just FYI All:

I did this mod on a 2001 Jetta 1.8T and have the following to say

    A) The wiring harness in my car was beige (not black as suggested in the DIY)

    B) The cable is the exact cable shown in the DIY - clear

    C) I cut the cable (ie not tapped) and I have no problems with my horn... it still beeps as it used to..

Big props for the DIY... sweet mod! Can't wait to get the alientech window mod in there with it

i wouldn't cut the wire, i would T in a wire splice to that wire. In case something goes wrong you only remove the T and not have to repair
    the harnesss wire.
i think running the wire up the A post is good enough.

What about tapping the wire into the radio antenna, ahh

remind me to bring an electrical fire extenguisher when i do this
kids don't try this on your VW, try it on a rice car first
