there is no reason to use 14 gauge wire. You might as well use smaller stuff (18 or 20) and use the correctly sized (18-20, which are red/pink) butt connector.

I researched thru all the threads about this and some had problems with 18 gauge wire, while others were successful with 14 gauge. I wanted to play it safe. Please don't hurt me

considering the minimal voltage running through that (its just an antenna) i would attribute it more to installation/installer than anything, but whatever works. You can always get step down butt connectors to if you don't like doubling over the smaller wire (which does work perfectly fine).

Yeah, have you ever seen the antenna wire that you get with your home theater system? It's like a fricken 24 gauge wire, you can floss with it. It almost really carries NO current, you wouldnt even be able to measure how little of a current passes through that wire...

Some of you might be annoyed at how our keyless remote works from only 10 feet away. Well, this is the DIY project for you.

PS: This is one of my better guides with more than 2 pics :wink
DISCLAIMER
- This guide is based on a 2000 GTI 2.0L. Details may vary between models, years, and makes. I am not responsible for any damage or stupid things you do!
- The results may vary per car
TOOLS AND MATERIALS

(That's my cat's tail in the pic. You don't need a cat for this mod :wink)
1. Butt Connectors for wires (14 gauge)
2. 14 guage wire (6 feet, don't use speaker wires)
3. Wire cutters/strippers
4. Torx Screw (T20 I think)
5. Flathead screwdriver
PROCEDURE
A. The Wire
1. Take the end of your 14 gauge wire and strip off ~1cm

2. Crimp the stripped wire into one end of the butt connector
http://is.rely.net/2-1060-1143...g.jpg
B. Removing the interior trim
3. Remove the fuse box cover with your flathead screwdriver
http://is.rely.net/2-1060-1143...A.jpg
4. Now you have to remove the housing around the fusebox. Get a good grip and pull it out (like how you open your door) and it slide out
http://is.rely.net/2-1060-1143...Q.jpg
5. After you remove the housing, look under your dash. You have to remove THREE T20 torx screws
http://is.rely.net/2-1060-1143...g.jpg
6. Now remove the trim pieces. You will see a metal plate underneath. You have to remove SIX T20 torx screws
http://is.rely.net/2-1060-1143...g.jpg
C. The Wiring
7. Take a look inside and locate the TWO wire connectors. Disconnect the beige one
http://is.rely.net/2-1060-1143...w.jpg
8. This is the current wire that is the antenna for the keyless remote. Not too impressive
http://is.rely.net/2-1060-11437-l-6fQGi4uS8ytBCM8tNZWnw.jpg/url]
9. Cut the wire. Make sure you leave enough slack for you to strip
http://is.rely.net/2-1060-1143...g.jpg
10. Strip ~2cm off the wire and fold the bare copper in half. The purpose of this is to make it a little thicker so the connection is good
http://is.rely.net/2-1060-1143...Q.jpg
11. Connect the antenna to the other end of your butt connector. Plug the beige wire connector back in
http://is.rely.net/2-1060-1144...g.jpg
D. Running the "antenna"
12. Now run your wire out the fusebox...
http://is.rely.net/2-1060-1144...g.jpg
13. And up the first pillar...
http://is.rely.net/2-1060-1144...w.jpg
14. All the way to the second pillar. I had a lot of slack so I also ran it down the pillar
http://is.rely.net/2-1060-1144...Q.jpg
15. Now tuck the wire into the trim and you should finish with a very clean 6feet antenna!
http://is.rely.net/2-1060-1144...Q.jpg
16. Test your remote range before you reassemble the interior
RESULTS
Before I did this mod, I tested my keyless remote range. My GTI was parked in my garage, and as started unlocking it as I walked backwards. I was less than 10feet away before the remote stopped working. After this modification, I was over 40feet away and it was still working. I ran out of room so I don't have an exact distance, but 40feet is plenty.

Link works for me now. Thanks for a great DIY. POS remote can't even get my car from the window to the garage (about 15 ft). I'll have to find some time to do this.

i just did it yesterday when i was working on my car and being bored...before like you said i couldnt be more than 10ft away 15 with putting the remote to my chin and the car would barely work with the remote...tried changing batteries nothing ever worked..i have alientech so in the summer it sorta blew cuz i couldnt ever get the car aired out in time..anyways did this mod yesterday ran the new wire up then a pillar along the roof and back to the b pillar...all i can say is i can unlock my car from over 200ft away now, yes we even measured it it works amazingly well and the mod took all of 10 mins to do and when you put the remote to your chin it goes even farther

awesome DIY just finished wiring it up myself... im getting about 50m myself actually.
I didn't bring the wire down the b-piller though; just continued guiding it along the edge of the headliner to where the rear left passenger seat is.

Has anyone wired this up to their radio antenna? Would this work better or would it not be worth it? This DIY way seems easier but hmmmm I don't know

I just did this mod about 15 mins ago. My Boot sole measures 13.5 inches and I could unluck my car up to 187 foot steps away. You do the math

you might risk interference with ur radio reception... or short out the radio altogether? (iono just speculating )

mine works from what seems like a mile away anyhow?! serioulsly,
my driveway is 130 feet long at it works from 3/4 of the driveway, stock. no ghetto wiring required.

25. 10-24-2005 05:30 PM #100
i did mine today with 14 gauge stranded wire. used a scotchlock connector to connect to the antenna wire. i used 10 feet of wire and it was enough to run up the pillar, across the drivers door, and down most of the rear door.
one thing of note was that my antenna was not on the beige connector but rather on the black connector. that took me a second to realize.
edit: in your pic, your left conector is beige and your right one is blue.
edit: in my car, my left connector is black and the right one is beige.
so basically, it should read "remove the connector on the left (drivers side)"
