Thread: Hatch leak (not lock seal)

  1. 10-23-2005 10:53 PM #1
Good amount of water getting in. This does not have a sunroof and the hatch lock seal is new. We're talking water near each wheel well.

I am guessing the seal for the hatch but not sure. Anyone?

It's probably either your hatch seal, the glass seal, or your tail lights.

I have the same problem I'm getting a new lock seal and sunroof, so maybe one of those'll be my problem

EDIT: I'd definitely check the tail-lights, 'cause on mine, the glass and hatch seals don't leak, so I know it's either the sunroof, lock seal, or hatch seal.

Yeah, I've been wondering about the seal for the taillights. Thanks.

Wow, another Richmonder. I had replaced my lock seal, but I still had water coming in the trunk. I know for sure now its coming in through the bottom part of the tail lights. I hope to patch it up this weekend with some black flexible sealer calle "Co-ax." It kind of looks like fruit by the foot gum but black.

I've had a leak through the logos as well, check those too.

    Interesting.

Aaron - where did you get the 'Co-ax'? I'll think I'll give this a whirl.

Btw, are there any other Richmonders on here?

It looks like, from your profile, that you have a big rear spoiler car so Im not sure how they attach but for my car I was getting leakage where the spoiler fits into the hatch where the glass curves. I, however, have a small spoiler car and this may not be an issue for you, but thought Id try and help

I second the logo seals leak. i just got some rubber grommets from the hardware store. they work perfect.

I think I'll try some of this Coax on the inside of that hatch opposite the badge openings.

OK, next leak. Standard - I think the drain tubes under the hood near the wipers are clogged, because I get the standard wet passenger footwell and sometimes get some water in the driver's footwell. If the tubes are the issue, how on earth do you unblock the biotches?

if the drain tubes at the corners of the fresh air cowl are clogged you can a)blow them out w/ compressed air if you have it at your disposal or b)get a wire coathanger, straighten it out and fish it up and down the drain tube til it flows water freely. the h20 should pee freely from behind the wheelhouse liners, just to the rearmost portion of the wheelhouse opening.

I get the standard wet passenger footwell and sometimes get some water in the driver's footwell.

this is usually the result of the drain tubes being clogged. with nowhere to go (out the draintubes) water will pool up up in the cowl area. then all ya gotta do is take a steep left-hander and the water overflows the fresh air intake of your HVAC system. that's the fresh air 'blend' door under the black duct-looking thing that goes from the center of the cowl over to the right side of the car. water WILL find its' way to your carpet, as you've already discovered...and it's usually the worst on the pass side.

on the d/s of the car there are a couple of small holes up there in the cowl...what purpose they serve i have no idea. i noticed this in the first shell i stripped. but if you have pooling water up there, it can find its' way down. all the control cables (clutch/speedo/htr/accelerator) pass through the firewall much lower, so i wouldn't suspect them. it wouldn't hurt to take a look at them (and their sealing grommets for that matter) just to be sure. all the control cables (except htr cable) come w/ new grommets on them, so cable replacement will be the only way to fix them if you find a problem there. make sure your main wire harness grommets are intact and properly seated too. you may hafta drop the fuse panel to get a good looksee from inside the car.

hope that helps....leaks are a real PITA. verify your htr core isn't leaking and/or the htr hoses aren't loose or leaking. if they were you'd smell coolant inside the car which you didn't mention. this type of failure most often manifests itself w/ wet d/s carpet

steaming coolant is toxic b/t/w...so fix that one ASAP if that's what you find

    it's not just a car...it's a scirocco!

Yeah, I had the core go in my old roc, so I know that deal. This one is set to go, probably this winter. I smelled a slight odor last year, but no wetness to speak of.

I actually think it is two things for the footwell issue. One, I know the drain tubes aren't functioning properly as I do have that water puddling in the cowl. Two, I suspect the door gaskets (after a big rain the floor will be damp, without driving). Not sealing that great. So, any suggestions are replacing those nasties?

You're a great source of info, Ginster!
