After a long quest, I have finally secured the ever so wanted to know 4 door 1.8t production figures!
We all are aware that these cars are "rare" as in they were only produced for 2 production years. Many people have tried to get these figures with no luck.... I with the great help from Jim O'Neil from Arnold and a contact at Volkswagen, we have finally gotten our hands on the production figures.
Enough with the typing... on to the data! Direct from VW, which I can not thank enough!![]()

7,000 is quite rare, considering..... Look at the "RARE" mk4's... and these figures are right there, if not more rare per production year!

Great job finding that info!Any chance of finding a breakdown by color and/or transmission?

Probably not. But it can't hurt to ask.. I will give it a shot!
But overall this is more important than what transmission and color.
I'll give it a shot tho!

Higher than what you imagined, or higher than what was thrown around on here which led you to believe a lower figure?
If you break it down into production years (2) thats an average of under 3900 per year.
Which ends up being more rare than an R32, which had 1 production year run of 5000 units. And it is also less than a 20th AE which had 4000 units in the US.

Actually higher than I had imagined because when I was doing research to buy my car, I found that Atlanta Dealerships were selling an average of 4-5 Golf 1.8T's per month. At least that was the data that I got from fightingChance.coml.
Still, I'm happy, whether VW made 7,000 or 70,000 of these guys. I'm just glad they decided to make them.

I bet Candy White is the most rare 4dr 1.8t.![]()

We will see what the finall outcome is... But this is a huge step, we now finally know how many were produced. And by looking at your VIN you can find out what month it was produced!Again, This needs to be known!

I'm putting my money on Mojave Beige.
I had the option to buy one in Mojave Beige back in 2002. Had I known how rare it was, I would have bought it.
I bet they didn't make 500 in MB.

Talking about 4dr 1.8T though. I thought Mojave Beige came out after they pull the 1.8T from the 4dr model. Oh well....Candy White is nicer.

Maybe it was Wheat Beige then, but I doubt it.
What I know is I saw it with my own two eyes. Color name aside, it was a beige 4dr 1.8T w/ beige interior.

Do people consider the .:R32 and 20th rare or limited? Yes, because they got numbered plated to show limited production. Both were produced for 1 MY and their figures are 5000 and 4000 respectively. The Golf GLS 1.8t beats those based on MY production.
Prove me wrong if you feel (as I know nothing)

Dustin...I have been trying to track down the # of FY cars imported to the US or total production #'s....do you think your contacts might help me????Thanks,

To be quite honest, the "how many were made each MY" is a jaded way of looking at it. That doesn't particularly matter. A 2001 is very much the same as a 2002, so the two years assimilate.Okay, so you've got 7707 of them. You've got 5000 .:R32s. You've got 4000 (plus Canada's 200 or 250) 20AEs. You've got 1500 337s.
It's all relative. You want to relate it to the 337? None of them are rare. You want to relate it to a 1.8T GLS Jetta? They're all rare.
Let's all stop getting offended by it and realize that what may be "rare" to one person may not be "rare" to another.

I'd put them in the rare category because most of them were probably sold to non-enthusiasts. That's why you don't see many at shows. In that sense, they're hella rarer than 20ths and R32's.I see a whole lot more 20ths and R's on the street and I'm always looking for badges on Golfs. Rare to see the 1.8T.
And who knows how many of them will find their way to the graveyard quicker because its just some hand-me-down car some girl got for her 16th birthday?

That is well put, but we are talking about production numbers. I can guesstimate that a 1.8t GLS Jetta doesn't fall into 3,500 per year!
