The passat has a lot of cool techie things that make me go OMG!
Like the "both" mirror adjustments so diff size people only have to adjust the left mirror to adjust both.

what cool secrets have you found?

3 blink turn markers on mirrors, touch once, blinks 3 times.

Yea, I know some of these things many of you already know, but someone new to the Passat may not.

I love the umbrella pocket. Not that it's a big secret since they always seem to mention it in all the ads and literature, BUT, it's SUCH a great idea since it's self-draining. Just today actually, I went and got myself a nice new umbrella from Brookstone that fits in it very nicely.

This could turn out to be a long thread ( due to the '120 not so standard features' )

I was looking at the new Jetta and the new Passat in the dealer showroom while my B5.5 was being serviced and one thing I noticed which perhaps one of you who now owns one these cars could tell me. Where is the oil filter on the engine as I could not see it worth a damn? What kind of oil filters are they using and how do you get at it?

When ever I look at a new car the first thing I look for is how can you service it and where everything is for repairs. The engine bay of both the new Jetta and Passat are very compact, so much so that you don't seem to be able to get at things very easily for maintenance. Another item on my list was the location of the battery, which has been moved back into the engine bay area from behind the firewall on the B5.5. From an engineering stand point this not good as the battery will have the hell cooked out of it in the engine bay of a turbo charged engine. I have not seen anyone mentione this am I the only one who has noticed this? If not, fellow new Passat owners please feel free to chime in and tell us what you have discovered?

The battery in the V6 B6 is in the trunk.

The oil filter, I believe, is a cartridge type. It's like the air filter. Again, so I've heard. I've stopped changing my own since I got my '98 GLX.

    16. 11-07-2005 01:08 PM #16
The oil filter can be found where ever the vw mechanic finds it. Seriously tho I'll never know.

Cruise control can be adjusted in +/- 5MPH _OR_ +/- 1 MPH increments. +/- 5 is done by pushing cruise stick up/down (like a turn signal motion). Cruise speed is increased +1 MPH by pulling the cruise stick toward the driver, decreased -1 MPH by pressing the Set button at the end of the cruise stick.

Tiny white light near top of arm rest compartment lets you see what CD's or whatever you got stored at night when you lift lid.

take off the engine cover, air filter box and battery and you've got a lot of space available. takes about 10-15mins for this.

most of these "secrets" are written out in the owners manual.

    27. 11-07-2005 05:03 PM #27
I didn't see this one in the manual, but it is not quite a "feature", either. You cannot put the wipers in the service position when the hood is not locked. It protects the car from boneheads like me who want to check the engine oil while the wife is cleaning the windshield.

I like the Passat umbrella available from the dealers....and all the other little things like the "Passat" flashlight.

OMG hardly secrets, plus the sun visor thing I mean come on, surely every car ever has had this!?

Still yes it is a cool car very pleased with my 2.0 TDi Sport. 3000 miles done and no problems, laughing at my old 330D whicj cost £10k more (company car thank god).

My secret is that if you press the bottom of the VW badge on the rear of the car....a secret world opens up. Try it go on. If you get in and close it there's a secret glow in the dark escape handle.....you have to say open sesamie though.

OK Sorry I am being an ass, enjoy the new mota!

    30. 11-09-2005 12:58 PM #30
On the B5.5 there was a "hidden" opening below the steering wheel to the left where the Owner's Manual would nicely fit. Many drivers, as well as a couple of sales people didn't know it was there or what its intent was. I liked it -- freed up the glove box.

Where do people put their Owner's manuals in the B6? The slot is gone, replaced by a compartment that seems to be an odd size. What do people plan on storing in that compartment?

There is also a lot of space under the seats, but I don't know how usable it is....

    31. 11-09-2005 02:42 PM #31
The manual fits nicely in the glovebox. There is a little orange latch which you can pull and TADAAAA....there's a compartement made for your manual.

Little note though; it doesn't work if you have a 6 disc changer installed. In that case open your window and store the manual on the boardwalk.

    32. 11-09-2005 04:31 PM #32
Dr. Bob, I saw where the oil filter is the other day at the dealer, its in the front bottom part of the engine right in the middle, it has a plug type nut which you release it to empty the oil from the filter before removing it, the oil drain is further behind, the reason you didn't see it is that there is a black plastic cover which the dealer had removed to service the car.

Also I noticed there are a lot of aluminum chassis parts, everywhere I touched were either plastic or aluminum, the rear suspension has some steel parts. I guess thats how they kept the weight down.

As far as cool features my favorite is the two red spot lights next to the sunroof control which light the front console very elegantly. Also don't do like I did and look for power steering fluid, there is none

    33. 11-09-2005 06:09 PM #33
I don't have the 6-disc CD changer and the compartment that you pull down in the glove box is much too small for the owner's manual. In fact there is a cable in the back. Maybe I have the wrong glove compartment insert?

I can measure the opening. The manual doesn't fit in the long way (hits the cable at the far end of the drop-down box) and the width of the manual is several inches wider than the opening.

Thanks Flywolf, I had completely forgot about the red lights. That is a really cool feature.

No you're not. I actually know many salespeople who didn't know about the rear latch. I even missed it for the first three days I was around a b6.
