I did a search before posting, but i wanted to let you guys know that if you want a set of hood struts that work great on our MK3s get yourself a set of struts at autozone (part number E95212)
They were $40 and work perfectly. Here is my car. If you want a DIY (completely easy), just let me know. I can also take pics of the struts installed as well.![]()

With a mk3 hood, and these short lifts, it's not possible to just use one. MK4's come with just one, but that's a longer, heavier-duty lift. I've been using the exact same lifts from AutoZone for two years, and I freakin' love 'em. Very easy install, they even come with the ball-socket bolts to mount them.

Just don't turn the wipers on with the hood all the way up![]()

AutoZone![]()
Now DONT let any1 else open your hood.
It will fly up every time and you'll have 2slap sum fools.

thats really cool....i had thought of doing this before by using the same struts used on a golf hatch http://www.germanautoparts.com...132/2 ....i don't know if they're stronger/weaker than the autozone ones but if i were to put struts on my hood i would by thesejust personal preference cuz i'm a freak about using OEM parts

I can understand what you mean about OEM parts. But as long as the parts meet or exceed the OEM standards you'll be OK. And really, do you think all OEM parts are actually OEM? Even the manufacturers buy their parts from 3rd party companies. Take a look at your VW closely and identify all of the parts that VW buys from other vendors. Sachs clutches, Sachs suspension, Ate brakes, Bosch electrical components, BBS wheels, Fuba antenas, Recaro seats, and the list goes on.

I used 2 of them personally, but after installing the first one, it worked very well, but with 2 it is fun to watch friends open it up.![]()

Have a set of JOM hood lifts and love them.Open the hood, lifts itself and you can work on the car easier too

augh....<rant>
of course OEM parts are not all manufactured by the OEM... they are the parts SpECCeD by the OEM.
My Volkswagen engine has a BOSCH fuel injection pump..
Should I be complaining?
My glass is made by Securit, should I be worried?
Hell no.

glad I could be some help.
just to let you know, mine dont fly right after releasing the secondary latch. you have to lift it about 6 inches and then you need to watch your chin.....its fast as hell.![]()
#27
I'm pretty sure there's a detailed DIY (or link) in the Mk3 DIY thread on this. I had this on my last GTI, but only used one strut, worked fine and since it opened slower I didn't need to worry about my car knocking me out lol.I guess I should get around to doing this mod for the GLX. Thanks for the reminder guys.

can't stop it half way. more like 1/4 open, before they extend.
#31
One of my first mods and still my favorite "mod for the buck"I used two.
#32
you could just pop them off and use something to prop it up at shows like in have seen alot of folks do.![]()
#33
or be cool and run a polished chain from the latch to hold it in place.Im thinking of this but whith my boser there is alot of weight added.

Yep...I do that. you can leave the hood open, but not halfway. Like he said, you can take it to about 1/4 open or before the struts start to extend. Watch your chins!!!![]()

so if all you guys are saying it flies up so fast with 2 why not just use one and have a moderate lift?
