Thread: Stage 1 2 3?

  1. 11-27-2005 10:42 PM #1
Can some one clear up the labels stage 1 2 and 3 to me? what does it take to be labeled these stages? thanks

  2. 11-27-2005 11:11 PM #2
Stage 1: ECU upgrade to work with stock everything else (K03 turbo, exhaust, fuel, etc.)
Stage 2: ECU upgrade and cat back exhaust.
Stage 2+: ECU upgrade, cat back exhaust and downpipes.
Stage 3-: K04 turbo upgrade but using K03 based ECU and no additional fuelling (aside from maybe a 5 bar FPR).
Stage 3: K04 turbo upgrade, proper fuelling and Stage 3 ECU upgrade to work with the Stage 3 hardware.

Things like intercoolers, etc. can be added with any of these stages.

Stg2 S4s tend to walk away from E46s. Stage 3 cars RUN away from e46s. I have run several and driven several. Great cars.

I will have to test this out. My friend has an M3, but it has Dinan programming and SMG. I'm still going with M3 though, especially top end.

An E46 M3 is defenately faster than a Stg.2 S4....I don't kno who thought of this kind of crap?

    M3 > 343 Hp (rwd)
    S4 stg 2 > max.320 Hp (4wd) .......do the maths.

It's not just about math it's about the situation. There are large differences from a standing start and a roll. I know my little VW outruns a B7 RS4 until 100. Why would I bother racing any faster then that when I know I'd win. Same thing with the S4 vs M3, if the Audi owner is smart they'd get them at the line and the M3 would never have the time to catch up.

Oh and Stg3- could also be larger injectors/maf on K03 software as well, not just the 5bar FPR.

Hp is not everything. TORQUE!!!!!!! Torque curve, etc.

You also have to note that the numbers you quoted are PEAK HP, not the HP across the rev range etc. Esay to have a car the peaks higher but has a lower average HP across the entire range.

I spanked a 996 carrera pretty well from a roll at 60 to 130mph. I was stage 1 at the time and it's a wagon.

Also, since I went stage 2 + I've had a chance to go head 2 head with 2 C6 corvettes (not Z06) and they also were no contest.
One of them was a convertible with 20's on it that i reeled in from a dig after a 2 car length advantage to the vette and rolled by him at about 90 and kept pulling on him up to 120 (red light). I could tell he was embarassed.

Stage 1 falls on it's face after about 5000 rpm or so.
Stage 2 + pulls to redline like a freight train and you can watch the fuel needle drop while you're doing it too (5bar FPR & stage 3 software).

On paper I should be well over 400 ft. lbs..
Torque is where its at. Those cars might have walked me after 140 + given enough road but I've had the wagon to 155 and there was still plenty left in her.

I love this wagon but it's a money pit

Forgot to mention a 348 spyder (late nineties model maybe) he couldn't hang either but that was from a dig where I had the advantege for sure.

Man you can really see how much weight they hung out over the front wheels. No wonder these things push so bad with stock suspension.

Is your GTi a turbo or NA VR6? a RS4 are a fast car, were did you run one? I had a 98 GLX VR6 Jetta with cams and intake, cat back, chip and I don't think it would pull with an RS4 to 100.
I am lurking my self in my STG 3 S4 to run a RS4,

its not even a race. a healthy stage 2 will beat the snot out of one.
i raced one and im stage 3 and it looked as if he wasnt racing, but believe me he was trying.

Im 2+ and i have pulled on an rs4 from 50-120mph i was up like 4+ car lengths, i have also raced a 911 and pulled the same mph and beat it by like 3+ car lengths.

... Within reason of course... "eff" the stages, and the competition... It is all about the individual cars, the drivers and situation at hand.

Take it as you may, but I personally have ripped on what were supposed to be the stronger cars, in each of my cars that I own.

1986 GTI 8v (strong) at the time, 98 GTI VR6 (freak motor), and my 2001.5 S4 Avant (Freak when chipped)

I won't go into details, but there are countless encounters that I have had with these cars versus "stronger" opponents if you will, and well I surprised Many of them.

So anyone that tells you there is no way you pulled on "x" with "y" can be talking out of their arses... But! there are too many people that do just that, and tell "stories" that are simply not true.

It all depends.... The best thing is to truly know your car, become part of it... and if you have a strong one... your ahead of the game.

Agreed. It's def not about "mine's bigger than yours" all the time.

If you enjoy your car and know how to drive it, then all the stories are just for bragging rights. A lot of my joy of driving comes when there's noone else on the road.

If you read my earlier post above, I've raced some formidable cars if you go by "Car & Driver" statistics but in the end I don't own my car because I wanna be the fastest guy out there. A stage 1 VR turbo would rape me but on occasion it does feel good to be the underdog with a stationwagon and out drive someone with a bonafide sportscar.

My all time best story is outdriving a guy at Summit Point WVa (road course not drag) who was in a 993 Carrera 4 with my N/A VR6 Jetta. He even came up to me in the paddock to give me props. It was one of the best time's I've had behind the wheel. It was also very humbling to realize that you don't know everything about driving (had an instructor in the car with me).

Joy behind the wheel = 75% driving & 25% percent car.
