I'd have a leather strap though.

And the original Heuer mechanical one would be the one I'd like most.

I like them too (and Monaco) but don't like the fact that it isn't crystal glass.

Hey all, I know there is a few watch nuts out there and I was wondering if you had $10,000 to buy a watch what would you buy...

Im thinking a Mont Blanc Automatic Timewalker Chronograph for about $8K apprantly.

Seriously. Well not for me, for my dad

    Todd

I'd get one of these vintage Omegas built up from NOS parts for about 2k (ignore the bracelet in the photo), then I'd probably buy another couple of vintage Omegas and go on a Holiday with the balance

How big are his wrists? If big enough a Panerai may be the go, get the right one and they seem to go up in value. They have modern and vintage styles, the vintage styles show the best taste IMHO

Actually for 8k you could have a holiday in Singapore and buy that Mont Blanc, paying retail for that in Australia is mental. It's a bit of a cliche but a Rolex holds it's value well and is one of the most liquid consumer goods in the world, it can be flipped for cash in probably any city on the planet.

Panerai! How can I not think of that. Excellent watches. It's COOL! As for buying retail, who does that anyway? Most of the time I am able to get better prices here (after claiming GST) than discounted price in Sg.

Franck Muller Long Island, comes with or without the 'bling'. Or if he wants something very large the cortez has just been released and will be very rare. I can get you a good deal im looking out my window now at the geneva flagship store. Save 15K!

Wayne, how many watch places are there in Collins street!?! What end are we talking? Are we talking one named after a certain European nation renowned for its watch craftsmanship? We know a guy who knows a guy who knows the owner of one of the ones further up the hill - they did a ripping deal on my sisters watch!

Im trying to talk dad into a IWC Portuguese Chrono, but I dont hink he is having a bar of it... I think we will have a bit more of chat about it tomorrow and maybe go look at stuff.

The watch collector I was refering to mentioned that the MB watches are very well made and very reasonably priced for what you get. He didnt say they were awesome, go buy one...

Hopefully that makes sense... I've had a few too many to drink

Both my wife and I ahve automatic Tag Heuer paid $750 each @ Monards in Collins St about 10 years ago....never missed a beat.

My brought my wife a nice Rado ceramic with diamonds which was around the $3K mark

I am looking at a Omega Bond watch next but $15K I would not go past IWC or Audemars Piguet or Patek Philippe

Franck Muller Revolution 2. At US$606k they might be a bit over your budget

Silliness aside, I have a IWC Portuguese Chrono which has been faultless.

I go for the mont blanc... not a rolex, so overplayed... they're for people with try hard ferrari 308's or mondial's, not the descerning gent with an s class, or a8 parked in the drive.

As for the million dollar wheels, what a bit@h to clean

i guess im not filthy rich like the rest of yas.
But.. I dont get the idea of a crazy expensive watch?
I understand having an expensive car. They actually do stuff differently.

maybe if it was a gift and there is sentiment attached i can see the value in an expensive one?
But wow. 10k on a watch? My $150 watch probly looks nicer than half of those things that have been posted so far.

I dont think u can go past a LEGO watch.

  20. 12-09-2005 08:25 PM #55
shopping around OS u might be able to squeeze in a simple Audemars Piguet royal oak.

..otherwise something like a Brietling navitimer

    here's a decent guideline....

I get asked the same thing, I have a tag which only cost about $3k I just love the solid construction and quality feel to it. Feels like it was carved from solid metal, the band and everything just feels much nicer than any of the cheapie generic watches.

I know it doesn't make any sense but I would never have any other watch!

  22. 12-09-2005 08:36 PM #57
dont get me wrong. i could probly justify 3k on a nice watch.
but we are talking 10k+ !

  23. 12-09-2005 08:43 PM #58
Don't worry, unless I had the money burning a hole in my pocket I wouldn't spend 10k on a watch either!

  24. 12-09-2005 08:46 PM #59
    Personal value determination - simple.

A good friend of mine has a sound system which has cost him more than the value of most people's home, yet he drives a $60k car and wears a $600 watch.

    To each his own!

The lego watch is a leader right now... THANKS WES!

The best thing is you can stick a lego man to it.

As for men getting an expensive watchs, it is like diamonds, etc. for women.
My dad doesnt wear any jewelery and rarely buys anything for himself besides
bits for his cars, so he has decided it is time he got himself something nice to
    show for his hard work.

A watch actually serves more function than a bracelet or a ring, so I think if
you can afford it why not get a nice one.

I said $10k, but that that was just to see what you would all like,
I dont think he would be so keen to spend that much.

I think he is sold on the Mont Blanc. I will find out some details as to who makes it, etc soon...

Iit's thin, well made, and any fragile/scratchable bits are well protected unlike many other brands. And you can get them with quartz movements so they are useful as a long-term everyday watch. I've had one since someone stole my Longines which got scratched on the second day I had it, and it looks as good as new, worn every day.

Have a look at Longines. I bought my wife one a few years ago after buying an endless number of watches for 200-300 bucks that broke, fell apart or tarnished real quick. She needed one that she could leave on all the time, and it has performed fantastically. Never missed a second, and still looks like it did when it came out of the box. I love my wife, but she's damn hard on watches. From memory it was about a grand, but I'm sure there's much more expensive ones than that, that will get close to your dad's budget. Just my two cents.

My favorite watch is a 70's Citizen Divers that cost petrol money, love that vintage style and it keeps excellent time. Looks like this:

Plus you never see anyone else with one on!

My dad still has his Citizen watch he got whenhe turned 21 off his uncle... looks very similar, but with a rubber band for the surf.

Wayne, you wifes car looks awefully similar to Snoopy

For that price Id go for a nice IWC Portugesier(?). There very nice and simple with a nice fat dial. Nothing tosser'ish just smooth.

Nick, he wants metal band... 99.99% of bands dont fit his wrist nicely.

He has 4 extra links in his Tag right now, with the clasp pins right on both ends...

  34. 12-09-2005 11:08 PM #69
I just bought myself an early xmas pressy...(it really pays to quote internet prices at the manager ).

I liked the Carrera, but once I saw this one it was game over.

Next step up I'd go IWC.
