Can someone indulge my n00bness and explain more about watch movements: when a watch from several manufacturers has an ETA or Viljoux movement with the same designation, "7750" for example, does that mean it's innards are exactly the same, or are there minor tweaks made by/for different brands?

And if one is going to drop a few grand on a watch would it be foolhardy to buy from OS, not withstanding the taxes/GST issue?

Liam, suggest a quick perusal of the timezone FAQ. See point 1.1.1 in particular and follow the link to this piece on the 7750...

...and a GIAC movement is a good half head better than an APR movement. Actually, chip wars have nothing when it comes to a bunch WIS's (that's Watch Idiot Savants)...I suspect it is an accurate diagnosis for many

All my watches came from OS - but make sure you can 100% trust the seller - so either someone with multiple references & lots of proof-of-ownership (for 2nd hand), or a reputable dealer (for new).

Hmm wonder if this is safe to buy from. Best price I can do locally is $3195 which they claim is about 20% off. 4K does seem to be RRP so not sure why dstore figures are so out of whack in buyers favour.

Jomashop.com is probably one if the safer bets for online. Been around a long time, and they often fulfil Amazon orders for a lot of higher end grey watches..

Markups are quite generous, at 20% off they probably still have 20-30% in it....

If one wanted to purchase a Tag Heuer Monaco 2011, where could they do that? It would surely have to be second hand, right?

Sorry, I should have been clearer. I'm asking on behalf of a friend in Aus. (buying it here isn't out of the question, but I can figure that out)

I gave my speedy a quick polish with polywatch and the crystal has come up like new. I've previously tried meguairs plastic polish, but it was pretty poor in comparision. Well worth the $8.

    lol, they've lost the plot.
But I'm sure many said the same when they came out with the original DSSD.

If it is in fact solid gold case and bracelet, the scrap value of it would be non-trivial, though still not near the price they're asking.

Must say I'm delighted with the GMT2. Because it's so much lighter than the Panerai, I wear it more and so it rarely runs out. I've only had to wind it once. And since fitting the NATO strap, it's even lighter and more readily adjustable.

That's massively geeky, yet the total opposite of all my mechanical watches.

    So I'm pre-ordering one
    2006 MkV 2.0TDI -> 2005 MkV GTI -> 2008 MkV .:R32

Have to admit that is kinda cool, but at the same time if you have to carry your phone around anyway, why the heck do you need the watch???

some people like well, say me for example, arent always able to pull their phone out of their pocket at every moment at work, or leave it on the other side of the workshop at times etc also while driving to see who's calling/if its worth pulling over for/ fumbling for my phone and answering, using GPS/timer etc when excercising as shown in the vid.. theres plenty of reasons i've always thought a companion watch to a smart phone is a great idea.

The open sdk etc part of it is quite nice and be interesting to see what apps are made /what its capable of as there's probably a zillion other uses that havent been thought of yet.

Oh yeah and i think the display should be square.. but whatevs.
