GT is an old term, older than GTI and it stands for Gran Turismo (Grand Touring) and is Italian. I is for injection, as mentioned above.

Most of the answers here are correct, just different translations. GTI stands for Gran Turismo Iniezione, or Grand Touring Injected in english. Final Answer.

the "I" moniker seems odd, it was good while most cars were carbed, but nowadays, all are injected.

I suppose, but GTT sounds kinda lame.

      Another splice of info though.

GTi is a copy righted name in the US, however in other places of the world the term "GTi" is as common as "GT" and "GS" are in the US. 206 GTi, Pulsar GTi et al.

In regards to owning a VW it stands for Get Things Inspected.

Ok, this may seem to be a different topic (maybe?) - but if GTI is to Golf, what is GLI to Jetta? What does GLI stand for?

i always thought it was GTi, hence my username (i had a penchant for writing my name in all caps at the time).

however a female friend of mine once saw my username and said "oh tom, that's so typical of you....". i didnt understand what she meant until she pointed out that the lowercase 'i' makes the word TiT a little more prominent in my name. took a girl who's mind was always in the gutter to pick up on that one

I think I am dumber for having read the above quote.

I've always thought GTI stood for "Gran Turismo Internacionale."

Side note: does the American GTO mean the same thing as the Italian GTO (Gran Turismo Omologato)? If so, for what series was the Pontiac homologated?

...and yet people kept posting! Why does this seem to happen every time someone asks what "GTI" stands for?

This was the original GT-injection badge, but conservatists said it wasn't as sexy as a red GTi badge:
