Quote, originally posted by CrssEyedNSmilin » Hmmmmm this is what Im getting. 35%. Front tint is illegal in our state, rear is not regulated. Im thinking with a 35 all around noone will ever hassle me. My Westy had limo tint ALL the way around.... and I never got trouble for it... then again I was driving around a blue millenium falcon... noone seemed to be looking at the tint
Thanks for posting your pic... it helped me decide
Hey I'm in Aurora too! I had 5% rear and 10% front on my Corolla and never got stopped in over 2 years with it.
I am thinking about going straight arrow this time with the new GTI though. 5% on the rears and maybe something like 35 or 40 on the front for SOME protection but not really noticeable. Maybe only 20% on the rear. I don't know, 35 seems so light.

I'm in the process of canvassing local tint shops. The best offer I've gotten is $199 which is "fully backed by the manufacturer's nationwide lifetime warranty which covers labor and any defect including color change or fading." But I'm not sure if that is ceramic film or not.I've got a platinum gray 06 Jetta and am looking to do a very subtle charcoal tint at maybe 50% on the sides and 35%(?) on the back.
Anyone got photos of this sort of light tint?

Having lived in South Florida, I can definitely appreciate the want/need for tinted windows. However that said, I still prefer the look without the tint, although that'sjust me (some cars look really good with tinted windows).I was curious though, I believe Mk5 R32's in Europe have an option for factory installed tinted glass windows (i.e. not a film). It goes without saying that it would be a pricey affair to replace a GTI/Rabbit with those pieces, but it would be interesting to see.

I have 20% Huper Optik Ceramic Tint on Gus Gus [the name of my GTi...] and it looks great! I would like it a bit darker, and I may get another layer of 35% Huper Optik to finish it off. Here is a shot with everything opened up. I love how it retaines the blue hue to the glass. I need to get a visor strip, I totally forgot about it when I had it done. They didn't even ask me hehe.
A side shot as well.
Here is an example of how the angle makes the difference, notice it looks completely black in this shot.
Just because I love this photo...

how did you go about getting the huber optik ceramic tint done? did you have to order it yourself or did the place have it already? Is it a common enough thing for alot of tint shops to have on hand? totally new to tinting here so Im not sure how to proceed![]()

It's not everywhere but I had a local Tint shop do it. I recommend not doing it yourself unless you really want to learn how. The shop usualy covers against bubbling and the like, plus Huper Optik has a real strong lifetime warranty. You pay for it though, it costs about 2x the price of normal tint, sometimes more. I paid $275 or so for mine and that was a really good deal. You have several grades of tint.
First is a Pure Dye tint. Don't get this ever. It is cheap to buy, and lasts 1-3 years at MOST before beginning to turn a purple color and often bubbling.
Then a Semi Metallic (part Dye and Part Metallic) which is a little more money and lasts a little longer.
Then you have Metallic, which is usually the best kind common tint shops have. This is usually the top end that they carry and runs about $150-$180 [in my area] for a GTI roughly. This lasts longer 5-6 years and usually has a good warranty behind it if it is a good company like Formula1 and a few others.
By last under all of those, I mean before they begin to fade or discolor and bubble. Usually turning a disgusting purple and sometimes intense bubbling occurs.
The ceramic is, pure luxury. It is a lot thicker than the Metallic and the benefit is that it Reflects the heat from the sun as well as the light [UV, Visible, etc.]. Metallic doesn't reflect heat at all. This just ends up with lower interior temps during hot days.
I hope this helps, if you need anything please ask!

32% is the darkest legal tint in GA, and FormulaOne offers a 30% which sounds like it will slot perfectly into what I'm looking for. I'm going to try and get an estimate on Monday, and I'll post what the price is.GREAT THREAD

Well, i Just got an estimate for FormulaOne Premier 35% (all metallic) for $280.00. I'm gonna see if they can go a little lower for me. They will NOT go any darker than 35%.A second quote was just given to me for $180.00 for Solargard (HP) ANY % I want.
