Any aftermarket tint film is illegal in RI...so I'm gonna put 5% all around and a car seat in the back.
I kid.
I might do 35% when I find the time and money.

I was just about to tint my white Rabbit when I walked out of work and saw that some jackass had tagged my back windshield with window-etching. any thoughts on whether a dark tint will hide it, or what else I can do?

35% fronts and 20% rear sides and rear.
Have to take it to be redone though...it's bubbling up already.

Is 75% worth it? Friggin NY laws. Might just risk the tickets.

It's not everywhere but I had a local Tint shop do it. I recommend not doing it yourself unless you really want to learn how. The shop usualy covers against bubbling and the like, plus Huper Optik has a real strong lifetime warranty. You pay for it though, it costs about 2x the price of normal tint, sometimes more. I paid $275 or so for mine and that was a really good deal.
You have several grades of tint.
First is a Pure Dye tint. Don't get this ever. It is cheap to buy, and lasts 1-3 years at MOST before beginning to turn a purple color and often bubbling.
Then a Semi Metallic (part Dye and Part Metallic) which is a little more money and lasts a little longer.
Then you have Metallic, which is usually the best kind common tint shops have. This is usually the top end that they carry and runs about $150-$180 [in my area] for a GTI roughly. This lasts longer 5-6 years and usually has a good warranty behind it if it is a good company like Formula1 and a few others.
By last under all of those, I mean before they begin to fade or discolor and bubble. Usually turning a disgusting purple and sometimes intense bubbling occurs.
The ceramic is, pure luxury. It is a lot thicker than the Metallic and the benefit is that it Reflects the heat from the sun as well as the light [UV, Visible, etc.]. Metallic doesn't reflect heat at all. This just ends up with lower interior temps during hot days.
I hope this helps, if you need anything please ask!

I called around to see what is available and some dealers are pitching a new "carbon" tint which is not dye, not metal, not ceramic. It does not interfere with wireless. Is this real or are they just calling something old and new name? I smell BS because it is cheaper than metallic. They also had a new clear tint that blocked all the heat from a heat lamp but it is crazy expensive, like $500. Any advice? Do metallics really interfere that much?

Pretty sure most cars come from the factory with 70 or 75% already. So no, it's not worth it.

ive got the carbon paper... and i dont know where your calling but it was atleast $50 more for the carbon paper, rather than the metallic... theres no dyes in it, wont ever fade and it looks darker than the metallic stuff too...i havent had any wireless problems with it, it looks a lot cleaner, a lot darker (for only 35%) and is supposed to last a lot longer

What brand did you go with? Also, what do people do about the dot matrix around the rear windows? I see that some are leaving it. The shop I talked to said they scrape if off first. What are opinions on that?

16. 11-16-2006 02:02 AM #116
i believe it might be either llumar, SunTek or 3m.... and it was machine cut so the size was all predetermined.. they left the dot matrix on the rear window but actually it did a good job at holding to it or atleast uniformly sticking..., each window was heat shrunk to the window exterior before applied and the job came out amazing.. if your in the MA area i would definatly recommend where i went

Hey I'm in Aurora too! I had 5% rear and 10% front on my Corolla and never got stopped in over 2 years with it.
I am thinking about going straight arrow this time with the new GTI though. 5% on the rears and maybe something like 35 or 40 on the front for SOME protection but not really noticeable. Maybe only 20% on the rear. I don't know, 35 seems so light.

bah...in my MKIV Black GTI i had 5% all around....Pulled over left and right in Darien/Woodridge/Willowbrook/Hinsdale/Lemont/lockport/homer/ect....ect....
it was funny tho when the cops would walk up to the car with there hand on the gun ....i couldnt see crap though at night
This time around im just going with 35% on the rears....
Im out in plainfield, usally on I55 or Route 59 alot...if ya see me Honk

here's a canadian LEGAL tint job

Different cities have different acceptability of these rules. In Ontario, cops wont bother with 20% tints because they get thrown out of court left and right. I had 20% and took em to court when they gave me a ticket, most of my buddies had the same thing happen to them. We all won our cases....
Most cops around here will stop for what they think would be around 5%.
