I have the 16g iPod touch and I just got my first problem.

Last night I was surfing the net with safari and it froze up on me. The screen went dark and the ipod wouldn't turn back on. I plugged it into itunes and restored it. After the restore the screen came back on, but now the screen itself is not responding. When I hit the home button I get the "slide to unlock" screen, but the slider won't move.

What did I do? Is there anything else I can do at home before I have to take it into a local Apple store? Oh and I'm a PC user if that makes any difference.

EDIT: I did a force reboot and got it working.

    Rant:

Sent in my 4th replacement iPod for the sad face of death. The hard drive clicks, and won't boot.

Apple sends it back saying it works. It does for a few days, then dies again.

I will be on my FIFTH replacement since February 2006 if they actually send me a replacement.

    I hate technology.

    Question about the ipod Classic...
I was playing around with a display one at work, and it was really, really sluggish. Late to react to me scrolling on the wheel, and selecting menus.

Was this fixed in firmware updates, or is it the way the Classic actually operates?

So, like many people out there I'm sure, I was excited when I heard that Apple had released the iPod touch. I could now have the sweet huge screen, the ipod, video, and above all, internet access.

But as I held the unit, and was amazed by its realistic internet experience. I began to wonder how often I could expect to really have a wireless signal to use. My home and office have wireless signals that I'm sure I could connect to. However, I already have laptops at both places. That leaves me needing internet when at my friends houses, and when walking around Boston.

But I'm not sure how much luck I would have with all of this. Most of my friends are barely able to get their own computers working on the wireless network, and they never are able to produce their access codes without some serious prodding. I also imagine that little coffee shops have wireless networks that I could use, but what about when I'm downtown at night, trying to find another drinking establishment, and I can't get a goddam signal?

If anyone has experience with this, I'd love to hear about it. Maybe the short story is that the touch is meant for college students who spend all of their days in wireless enabled buildings. People like me need to suck it up and get the iphone.

    Thanks,
    Stewart

Get an iPhone for not much more and then you'll always have internet access, even if its a bit slower than a true wireless network...and you get phone on top of it.

Seriously though, I do know what you mean. I dont find public wifi to be widespread enough to really have something like that be beneficial. Thats why its nice to have the access on the iPhone, even if its a bit slow on the EDGE network.

The real question is why do you need internet when you're walking around downtown?

I just took my iPod Touch to Europe with me, and I used it while walking around downtown quite a bit. booking hotels, checking my bank account, etc. It was actually extremely helpful, and way lighter than a laptop!

Yes. Create "whatever" in your computer and save it as an image file. Send to engraver...
I always plug in USBs right the first time.

I hadn't thought about the travel side of the itouch. Whenever you go somplace, you basically have a mini computer with you, on top of your ipod. That would be clutch when you wanted to use the internet, but you didn't want to lug around your laptop. Like when going on a ski trip, or just taking long road trips. I think that when on road trips you could actually have good luck with the itouch. its not that hard to just drive down a neigborhood street until you find an open network to connect to.

The real question is why do you need internet when you're walking around downtown?

For me, a lot of the value is in being able to do things like send IMs (not SMS) from anywhere; not everyone I know uses SMS, but lots of people use IM desktop clients. I can talk to those people. Or I have a friend in Australia who gets charged for every SMS sent and I have to pay for international SMS even though I don't pay normally for domestic SMS. IM is free, and Agile Mobile uses the data connection, not SMS, to send its messages. For those with unlimited data, but limited SMS, that's a plus.

Or, now that I have a phone with a true GPS receiver, if I'm in a city I don't know well I can use Google Maps to find out where I am (even if I'm walking; I can't exactly pull my in-dash GPS out of the car with me, now can I? and then search for the business I may be walking around trying to find.

In 10 days I'll be in Chicago at a convention. It'll be useful then, I'm sure.

With the iPod Touch, can you take pictures from the internets and store them on it to use as backgrounds etc?

    You can't

The new 1.1.2 firmware update fixes this.

Just plug your iPod into iTunes and click 'check for update', download and install it, and you're good. I've already entered a few calendar events into my touch. Oh and I'm not jailbroken either.

is it possible to have the new classic interface in a 5g video?

  22. 11-15-2007 11:16 PM #162
Wife got me the touch for my birthday and I have been bringing it with me everywhere and have found wireless signals all over the place, even when stopped at a red light I pull up the wifi menu to find signals and I'm shocked how many unlocked routers you can find. You can't depend on it but if you go to a crowded area it shouldn't be too hard free wifi.

As long as it's in the correct format, sure.
