i wonder why the d-backs are so interested in re-acquiring RJ? Another example of my what it is GMs actually take into consideration when going after players.

1- they think he can still be a good pitcher

2- they think on hs quest for 300 he will put arses in the seats

3- and I think this is the most important. They owe him X amount of dollars of deferred money. Somehow they want to work it into a deal so they don't just pay out the money for nothing.

Also they aren't the only ones.

"The Padres have made their final offer for Johnson and are awaiting a decision by the Yankees, who are expected to unload the pitcher by the end of the week. The source close to the trade discussions wouldn't identify names but confirmed Tuesday that the Padres are offering a combination of major- and minor-league talent for Johnson. One major-leaguer is believed to be reliever Scott Linebrink, who has been dangled in potential deals since the middle of last season."

To me it is very very unlikely he gets to 300 this year regardless of who he plays for, so why not just wait till next year and sign him as a FA? I don't know. But I do know if you get more then 1 team interested thats a good thing for the Yankees

Edit to add Zona also wants RJ in the front office after his playing days. Again not sure why.

Also the fall back plan for the Padres is said to be David Wells.

like it was said in the Offseason MLB Thread, im forcing my kid to become a lefty.

  4. 01-03-2007 02:46 PM #5359
    According to rotoworld:
The Yankees have reportedly turned down Arizona's request to have a window to work out an extension with Randy Johnson.

It's probably not a deal killer, assuming the Yankees are willing to pay a portion of what Johnson is owed next season. The finances have to be worked out before the Diamondbacks will make the deal

wonder if the yanks are trying to make the DBacks bump thier trade offer?

    Today in sports:
1920 – Boston Red Sox owner Harry Frazee sells pitcher-outfielder Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees for $125,000 plus a $350,000 loan. The loan is used to turn the play “No, No, Nanette” into a hit.

How much? If it was a cheap pick-up, I guess its ok. Fielding is good, but in terms of hitting.....I think I could put a better average up than him just being a slap hitter.

I think is was about 2 mill for a year.

I will be much happier seeing Mint-Kay-Vich playing first base on days Wang pitches then Giambi. Other then that this move is no big deal either way.

That ball belongs to Torre if they win and he retires after this season.

Why would he keep it?? A Yankee WS ball isn't nearly as rare as a Red Sox WS ball.

The rumors floating around that I am hearing.

RJ has agreed to a 1 year extension and the Yankees will get a pitching prospect and a major league MR pitcher.

I am also hearing that that deal is not final and the Padres are still trying to negotiate.

I am also hearing that they may try and package the MR pitcher [ Vizciano] and Cabrera for the Pirates pitcher Gonzalez.

Looking at Vuzcianos numbers for a right handed pitcher he handles lefties very well. Something like a 160 BAA last year and over the last 3 years just over .200.

    we get:
    ohlendorf
    vizcaino
    jackson
    gonzalez

i just think this was a salary dump for the boss, nothing more. ohlendorf supposedly has a plus sinker and is 6'5 but had a 3.6 era or something like that in triple A last year.. he may just be a journeyman mlb guy who knows... maybe he will be a prototype of the CHEINMING
rumor has it we're going to try to flip some of these pitching prospects for one of santana, zambrano, or willis. i could see willis or zambrano MAYBE being a possibility but not santana... i don't get why the new york post publishes stuff like us getting johan. i think we're definatley going to get clemens now since rj his gone (he's not a fan of randy) and let the young guys like sanchez compete for the #5 spot. my prediction for the '07 rotation:
    clemens
    wang
    moose
    pettite
    igawa/rasner/sanchez/ohlendorf/pavano

not too bad.. i'm just happy cash dumped malcontent RJ to replace him with roger

Jackson-25 years old, 6'5 215. In double AA posted a 2.65 ERA is considered a power pitcher with a "devastating" slider.

Ohlendorf 24 years old, 6'4 235. In double A had 3.28 ERA with 1 decent start in triple A. His best pitch is his change from what I can see. He has also been clocked in the mid 90's.

Gonzalez 23 year old SS. Double A his 280 .357 .758. I hear his glove work is very good.

At any rate these guys are rated C+ to B- level prospects. Throw in a decent major league bullpen arm and very little cash being exchanged then it's a good deal.

I think another deal is coming though so it is hard to say just how good the move is until it is all said and done.

You have to like what Cash is doing though.

He took two guys that wanted out, were old, both coming off injuries and owed 30 million dollars between the 2 of them and turned them into 5 pitching prospects, 1 ss prospect and one major league relief pitcher.

so the yankees are not doing that bad when in comes to prospects

they are getting like 3 or 4 for RJ
they got 3 pretty good young players for sheff
and they even made out in the Wright deal....

thats about 10 young players for 3 old dudes....BC can move these guys around and get some mlb experienced players

i like the direction the team is moving in..it really seems they are determined to getting younger

Still no takers on my sig question? You guys are slippin.

I'm really happy to see the end of the RJ era in NY. Two of the guys I had the most trouble rooting for on this team were Sheff and RJ. He was a big cry baby on the mound and was NEVER worth the money he was being paid.

Today's post had a pic of RJ and the title "Good Riddance".

So, Cash is managing this organization in a very early 90s kinda way. I'm lovin it. Young guys coming in. Old guys with big contracts going out. Good stuff.

I hear you guys talkin about Clemens. I dont see that happening. I think this year's rotation will remain...
    Wang
    Pettitte
    Moose
    Igawa
    Pavano
...with the younger guys waiting for their shot if someones lands on the DL.

Even if Clemens gets all the money that we saved by trading RJ, it is still a good move.

IMO Clemens and RJ are a wash. I think both if on the Yankees have a chance of getting close to Randys 05 stats. I just don't see Clemens as being some sort of savior or any better then that.

But Clemens plus 3 prospects and MR guy> RJ.

Cash said something about changing the attitude of the team as Clemens has come out and said he doesn't care for RJ's attitude. So it is no surprise that Andy doesn't care for RJ either. Well Cash is changing that attitude and getting younger in the process.

I think the Yankees made out pretty good in this deal.....Dumped salary only had to pick up 2 to 4 million a year....And got some decent prospects to either bolster the farm or to use in a later trade...

On the other hand I don't know what the DBacks were thinking ???? X millions for a question mark....That may or may not be healthy and may or may not put asses in the seats going towards 300...

Its a stop gap move for Arizona......Do the Dbacks even have any of the original Yankee prospects from the first deal???? I know for all the hype and Lusting after Dioner(sp) Navarro he's not with the DBACKS anymore....?
