Just like most teams frown upon guys playing pickup basketball games in the off-season, etc.....

Absolutely he should enjoy time with his son.....I just think certain activities, as trivial as they may seem, can become a major issue when an injury like this occurs.

Its sux, but I'm sure there is more to the story for him to have snapped his ankle like that.
I just dont see how bouncing on a trampoline is one of them.

There could be more to the story sure.

    But

I have a bulldog. They arent known for their athletic ability. In an attempt to get her fired up and start running around. I started to chase her and run circles around her and somehow managed to break my ankle in 3 places.

That after 4-5 years of football, 10 years of baseball, summer league basketball, snowboarding, and 2-3 years of BJJ. Of which combined have only pulled a hamstring once, and sprained an ankle.

Its a freak thing. If he is mountain climbing, sky diving something like that and gets hurt and it was in his contract then he is a d bag.

But if ANYONE looks at a trampoline in a kids place and thinks hmmm I could snap my ankle in half here please leave building and insert yourself into a protective bubble ASAP.

I see your point.....BUT....what if he fell wrong and re-injured the TJ repaired arm? What would your reaction to that be?

Its a crappy situation. My only point is that he was still in rehab mode, so maybe be a little less active in unsupervised activity (assuming he's rehabing with a trainer, etc).

You're not an athlete. Its bat **** crazy to be a part of an activity like this...when you havent even signed a long term deal yet. You can be a good Dad... and not jump around on a trampolene when you rely on your body to make a living. He might have ended his career.

Again to me it only matters what he was doing.

Was he at a bar? Was he drunk? Fist fight at Chucky Cheese? Street racing? You get the idea.

Doing daily activities, household crap, playing with kids. Stuff happens.

An activity lie this?? A Trampoline??

I do rely on my body to make a living. I am a mechanic. I guess I could shatter my hand or ankle playing with my kids on a trampoline, or break my back snow boarding. Break god nows what doing BJJ. If any of those things happened I might not be able to return to work EVER. And may need to change careers.

His accident was unfortunate but it isnt any more ridiculous just because he is a Yankee.

If an accident happens to me or you we might need to change careers and pinch pennys. He might have to change careers but has the luxury of a few mill in the bank to do so.

Again you tell me he was doing something that said his contract said he couldnt then he is a dumb ass. You tell me he got drun in a bar and got into a fight dumb ass.

Normal activity with a child? He gets a pass from me.

whoa Beng slow down. where did you read he was jumping on the trampoline? all we know is that the place had a trampoline that he was on. he could've been sitting down on it and hurt himself in a manner like that. his son is like 2 or 3. you think 250lb+ Joba is bouncing around like a 12 year old on it with his son? its a ****ty injury but the dude was rehabbing great, doing what he needed to get back on the field and from the beat writers, was really excited to be able to spend some time with his son who went down to Florida to visit. lets slow down and not equate playing with your son with being an idiot.

I just dont get the "activity like this part"

Should athletes not ever go skiing? Go Karts? Bounce house? Paint ball. Whats the cut off? If your kid likes mountain biking you cant take him if your an athlete?

If your buddy who works construction and pulls down 40k a year does the same exact thing Joba does and puts himself out of work for a year, are you calling him a dumbass? Or would you just say it was some pretty bad luck?

Also Joba may not have gotten that big contract yet but has made 4-5 million dollars in contracts alone since 2008, and he will get another million or so the next time he can step on the field again.

Point being. Us guys on the lower end of the pay scale have far more to lose but I dont think any of us would shy away from doing those things with our kids,

You guys are kidding yourselves. You dont compound fracture your ankle, lose a "life-threatening amount" of blood, and damn near kill yourself from sitting calmly on a trampoline. He had a catastrophic ankle injury. He was either wildly hoarsing around on the thing or he was launched off of it. Either way... Hes a pro athlete... His body is his living. The smart ones dont take risks like this. I never said I didnt like him or he wasnt good with the media or he wasnt taking his rehab seriously. I said he put himself in a dangerous situation, which was dumb, and it may cost him his career.

Edit to add... Elite pro athletes do not go skiiing... One, it could result in injury...two, many of their contracts will explicitely forbid those kinds of activities.

I still don't get it. "he is a pro athlete his body is his living" why does that matter? There are 1ks of jobs that aren't being a pro athlete where your body is your living. Should you not go skiing?

Weren't you a pt? If you sustained the same injury as joba you would have been out of work and possibly looking for a new career?

My sister in law was a hair stylist and smashed her hand a can barely use scissors anymore.

Who are trampolines, skiing, snow boarding ect for? Only those that work at desks?

The risk of serious injury caused by jumping on trampolines is VERY underrated. Especially if you have more than one person on it.

One person jumps on it, and the trampoline stretches down before rebounding. Imagine being the 2nd person on the way down during that rebound. This rebound is enough to send other people up in the air; you landing on it is going to feel like landing from a height way, way higher than you're actually coming down from.

Just because you bounce on it doesn't mean it's soft and fluffy. It will **** you up (See Joba)

That said...Joba wasn't being reckless because, like most people, he probably had no idea that this activity was so ****ing stupidly dangerous. And if it wasn't forbidden in his contract, oh well.

In case you couldn't tell, trampolines give me the heebie-jeebies. My cousins bought a big one for their kids in the back yard, and it creeps me out to watch 8 kids running and jumping all over it. I keep telling my cousins to either get rid of it, or make them play on it one at a time, but they just think I'm being a wuss. Even after one of the kids broke his leg on the thing and couldn't run for a year.

I always thought I would have a terrible accident on a trampoline. So I never got on one.

Only to break my neck on something else later in my life.

Yeah, life is full of risks and **** happens. I know.

But goofing around on a trampoline is a hell of a lot more risk than people realize. And for what? So you can bounce and jump? Not really worth it, IMO.

I realize I may be a bit of a hypocrite because I refuse to wear a helmet while bicycling, which some people think is insane. I get it, but still ... **** trampolines, man.

personally Ill take my risks without a helmet.

I am never bouncing on a trampoline of death. They are made for some people. Im not one of them.

Only time I got on one I hyper-flexed me knew several times. I may just not know how to jump correctly. As a kid friends would try to send me to space.

I just remembered. A member I just met at a meet was telling me he was jumping on a trampoline to close to a fence. He landed on the metal bar and punctured his lung. The story was stomach churning remembering how much a collapsed lungs and broken ribs feel..

Seems like we're viewing this trampoline business from 2 different sides, with the recent posts adding some insight in favor of the "don't do it" school of thought.

Whatever the opinions are, bottom line is Joba got himself into some serious **** with this latest injury.

Anyone hear/read anything new on this? Is he gonna be able to rehab back from this?

6 weeks in a boot possibly back on the mound in june or july.

I am against the trampoline if it says in his contract. If not then I am not against something children all over the world bounce on every day.

I find it hard [read impossible] that no proffesional athlete goes skiing, surfing, mountain bike riding, does any sort of manual labor, rides a motorcycle, drives a fast sports car or bounces on the dreaded trampoline

You know....I didn't want to link THIS to the injury bad luck that was starting up around Yankee camp, but its coincidental that he's been released and some better news has started to come in...

    Moves, deals and decisions

Looks like he is on 15 day DL. Which is fine. We have the depth and he can work on his control in the minors.

    CC
    Kuroda
    Phil
    Nova
    Garcia

    Pettitte
    Pineda

Hopefully one of those guys gets dealt mid season [that would mean the rotation is going good]

I know its only spring training and I know he is a Philly now but it was nice to see Granderson pick up where he left off and smashed a 2 run bomb off of Paps.

Yeah, I like that rotation... though Pineda's shoulder worries me. (shrugs)

Pettitte is already going to get a start in the minors on Thursday? Did I hear that correctly? He may be ready a lot earlier than June if that is true.

    2 more days!

Look at the deal Matt Cain signed!

I'm like Nostradamus I predicted an arm injury for Joba like 3 years ago. Now this Joba is like the gift that keeps on giving

    1949, 1951, 1958, 1978, 1996 and 1998.

You're welcome for the World Series this year. Only time UK won the National Championship and NY didnt was in 1948. The Yanks just weren't aware of the correlation yet.

    :
Predicting an arm injury for a pitcher is like shooting fish in a barrel.

Predict one [especially a hard thrower] wont get an injury in a 3 year period and you might have something
