You guys see Colon is headed to the Sox.

Not a bad move at all. Though the fact that this guy couldn't get any garanteed money means he is probably toast though. I hear in winter ball he was hardly breaking 90mph on his fast ball.

At any rate just hope he is healthy enough to face the Yankees in a couple series

it's a minor league contract, so no biggie if he amounts to nothing.

Looks like Hank isn't the only one who likes to talk to the media.

"Theo Epstein, general manager of the Boston Red Sox, called Yankees pitcher Mike Mussina a "bad apple" for complaining about the team's trip to Japan in 2004.

The Red Sox open this season against the Oakland A's in Japan. Appearing on Boston radio station WEEI last Friday, Epstein said, "Kevin Brown and Mike Mussina spent the whole time bitching about it ... and by the time the Yankees team got back from the trip they were all using it as a crutch."

Told of the comments, Mussina said sarcastically, "Yeah, we used it as an excuse for winning the division."

Epstein had been praising his players for their attitude about the trip.

"The research that we've done on the Japan trip from the teams that have previously gone," Epstein said, "is one or two bad apples can spoil the lot."

Said Mussina: "You need a comment from me about him calling me a bad apple? I don't have one."

Hey Theo Steinbrenner if you think starting the season in Japan, coming back to play more spring training games and then start the season again is a good idea then thats fine. But maybe its better to shut up and see how it really effects your team beofer you call guys out...

I was watching a YES program on the new stadium and it's going to have restaurants and everything. Most importantly...more bathrooms.

and you think a shorter spring training, followed by a trip to japan, then back for more exhibition games, then more traveling to start the season is just better than staying in florida for those 2 weeks and starting the season normally?

Probably not, but what does whining about it solve? It is what it is. They are professionals they need to suck it up an deal with it. If Pedroia or Ortiz complains about it then I'll tell them to shut the hell up too.

      Bad for who???

I could even maybe see if a Red Sox player who actually had to deal with the schedule said something about Mike AFTER they made the trip.

But the GM of the Sox who doesn't actually have to play the games making comment before his guys go over there is a little silly.

Nothing, but I think we all know who he would have been talking about if he had not said any name. Perhaps he shouldn't have gone there but it is a fact that Mussina and Brown complained many times about the trip. I can understand their frustrations but they get paid a ton of dough to play the game. They don't get to pick where they play.

Perhaps Theo shouldn't have said anything but he did. It's good for the rivalry.

ehh screw the rivalry. calling Mussina out by name accomplishes nothing but gets attention towards Theo and his team's trip. which could be exactly what he wanted to do.

No it was. ...but it is a bigger deal than you may think. It did take a toll on the Yankees that year. They were flat as hell for all of April.

      Flying to Japan
Playing exhibition games against Japanese teams
Playing 2 regular season games [which play at 6am here
      Flying back to the US
      Playing more spring training games
Starting the rest of the "real schedule"

I think not liking that is pretty legit.

If they moved the 10pm starts to 12 I am sure there would be some grumbles and that doesn't come close to the Japan trip.

Mussina didn't like that and he probably shouldn't have said anything. However like I said before he is the one that actually had to do it.

Theo is speaking on behalf of his players for a schedule that he himself isn't effected by at all.

If a Sox player came out after the fact and said "I don't see what Mike was talking about." Fine.

Not the GM before hand. What if the team comes back playing like s**t?

Mussina and Brown taking it upon themselves to voice their opinions on how bad the trip was only served to reinforce the negative feelings most of the team was already feeling. Bad in the sense that they should have just sucked it up and kept their mouths shut about it.

Mussina and Brown taking it upon themselves to voice their opinions on how bad the trip was only served to reinforce the negative feelings most of the team was already feeling. Bad in the sense that they should have just sucked it up and kept their mouths shut about it.

      thats fair.

But when you say "take it upon themselves", they didn't have pressconferences to tell people what they thought, and if many of the other players were feeling what they were feeling the few comments they did make probably wouldn't have mattered much.

That team was essentially made up of Veterans. Matsui,Arod,Jorge,Olerud ect ect ect.

Not young players who could be distracted.

Theo is speaking on behalf of his players for a schedule that he himself isn't effected by at all.
AFAIK, Theo travels with the team on just about every road trip. Trust me - he'll be on this trip as it's an important event for baseball.

Will it be difficult? Probably but remember that tens of thousands of people do the same trip every week - not as athletes of course and sans the chartered jet - and they get through it.
