I second that question!

Or is there some other way to lighten up the steering effort? Thanks.

Norby,I went from a '79 Rabbit sedan, manual steering, to a '93 Cabriolet with power assist. There really is not an appreciable difference in effort between the two.
The big difference is the ratio of the two steering racks, the manual rack took 3 3/4 turns lock to lock, the power assisted rack, only 3 1/3.
The power rack is much quicker, without the assist, steering effort would be objectionably greater.I really like the power steering, but having driven many miles with both, I would be reluctant to ever convert one to the other. Root canals are more fun, at least you get a day or two off work.
If you are determined, you'll need a pump, belt and all mounting brackets, a fluid reservoir, feed, pressure and return lines and a rack with mounts. If your car has a manual transmission, be sure to specify a rack for a manual, there is an essential shift linkage mounting bracket that is part of the rack housing. I'm pretty sure tie rods are different too.
Have you checked your tire pressures lately??
With both front wheels jacked off the ground, does the steering turn very easily? There are several components that could be bound up causing stiffer than normal steering effort.Ron

Modified by tolusina at 11:04 PM 2-23-2006Excellent suggestion, I'll check it out tomorrow. I just thought of something else. The previous owner installed what appears to be a smaller diameter steering wheel. I suppose this could be cause for a higher steering effort.

I've had both a power rabbit and a manual rack, the only difference that I had was the p/s rack leaked so much that I had to replace it. That was a real PITA.As far as both goes, at speed there is no difference, at stop there is the difference.
but P/S is fun
Grounds, Grounds, Grounds Replace them things.
Divorces, Great Coffee, and Electrics, all start with GOOD Grounds.

Agreed. I am currently ripping the PS rack out of mine so i can get some of that precious horsepower back. Power steering is for nerds.

Yeah, after a year of driving a car w/out PS, I've got the muscle built up in the right places, I hardly have to strain to move the wheels...
I think power steering is scary
