OEM Auto-dimming Compass Rearview Mirror Installed in a US spec GTI (pictures!)

I installed this mirror the second week I had my GTi back in April but I never took pictures... So for those of you that have all been waiting, the wait is over.

The install was simple. I used a 2005 Audi S4 Cabriolet rearview mirror with the floating compass. These are the newer style mirrors found on some A4's. Got the mirror form Ebay before I totaled my Passat and was planning on installing it then, but as fate has it she was totaled. So this nice mod found a home in the new GTI.

You will need the following OEM parts

(dont have the part number) Audi Mirror

8H0-857-593-4PK Mirror Cover

4B0 971 833 (6 pin connector)

000 979 018 (wire) you cut this wire in half and both ends plug into the 6-pin connector.

I removed the stock mirror by wrapping around a sock at the base, then using a set of pliars to rotate the mirror clockwise about 90 degres until it unlocked from the windshield base. Do this VERY SLOWLY AND GENTLE BECAUSE YOU WILL CRACK THE WINDSHIELD!

Then I did the same process but in reverse order to attatch the new Auto Dimming mirror.

I located a key switch power source (forgot the fuse number) from the AC fan. So the mirror powers up whenever the ignition is on.

I ran the wires up the A pillar and up the headliner where they rest very clean and unnoticible to the naked eye.

The only thing missing from the mirror is the oem cover, which I ordered from impex and should arrive next week.

Best mod I have done so far, and I wont be tinting my windows now nor buying the rear sunshade. This is such a nice feature to have with all the ass whipes driving there SUV's with Xenons in your eyes!

Mirror in action. You can turn off the compass function if you desire by holding down the power button on the mirror for 5 seconds. Also the button is illuminated RED at night so its a perfect match.

The mirror new is 550.00 and I got it on ebay for 110.00. the plug was 6 bucks and cables were 7. Cover was also 8 dollars.

Yes the auto dimming mirror needs power in order to dim.

Great job! I sold my Audi and bought the GTI...I miss that and the regular mirror is just crap. They came so far and skimped out on little things like the mirror. WTF?

So the old mirror and the new mirror attach to the same base on the windshild? Used to be on the MKIV you had to replace the windshield to get the proper mountinng base for the autodimming mirror.

Did you hook up the reverse line to it?

It's all the same mount that is used on the B5.5 Passat and MKIV (without auto dim or water sensor from factory) models.

Yeah, its just take off, and put on! No I didint hook up the reverse feature. Dont need it.

Does the compass requires calibration?

As for the button, I assume this turns the auto-dimming feature to an on/off mode?

No sorry I don't have a part number. As long as it is a an audi mirror that has the floating compass then you're set.

It auto calibrates all on its own.

This is such a much needed mod! Coming from a car that had an auto dimmer, i'm having a hard time living without it. Everytime i'm driving at night I feel like the Cape Hatteras lighthouse is riding my ass.

No doubt, that's the main feature I miss from my GLX GTI. I want that mod so now!

Great car man. Pckg 1, Navi, XM, 18's and Mirror mod very nice and well thought out. To me it's better than packg II. 18's, navi and mirror beats leather.

yeah there is no need to mess with all the rain sensing junk..hehe If all you want is auto dimming, then this is the mod for you. The base is the same on the A4, Passat B5 and B5.5 and all Cabrios and MKIV's. Most vw and audis with normal mirrors (non electrical) use the same mounts. So in theory they are "universal" hehehe

I have a 2004 Jetta GLS 1.8T and I really want to do this mod extremely bad. My Jetta doesn't have the onboard computer system which gives you the outside temperture and system checks between the Speedometer and the Tac. Pretty much it has the screen for it but does nothing. I have a basic Mirror which does nothing and has the round mount on the windshield. Could someone please post a link to a self Dimming Mirror that will fit my car. thank you......

This mirror that I put in the GTI also fits ALL Cabrio, MKIV and Passat (98-2005.5)

So this mirror will work for you. Look for MKIV Jetta and Golf mirror installs. There are a few out there.

im thinking of doing this to my gli but here are a few questions I have:
for this i will likely get the mirror that came with 05.5 jettas:

1. when u unmount the current mirror is there something left on the windshield that will hamper mounting the new mirror? Did u have to clean out the glue or something?

2. anyone know if the windshield used on jettas equipped with dimming mirror is different from the one we have?

3.so now its installed, and i have auto-headlight switch will headlights work auto too if enabled via vag com?

4. same question with rain sensing stuff?

5. can u also install the coming home lights under the door mirrors?

Don't limit you search to the Audi mirror....Dimming mirrors were available on MkIV N American GTIs and GLIs (2004 and earlier) - And they are currently available on MK5 vehicles in almost every country but the U.S.

The part numbers are probably all different but the mirrors are almost identical.

From what I have seen, they shared the same windshield mount. But, please triple verify the actual mount (and your current mount) before plunking down any cash.

Worst case, buy the needed mounting piece as well.

Your VW / Audi parts dept would be able to help / research
