I've noticed the A/C in my GTI isn't nearly as powerful as the A/C in my Corrado, I'm thinking it's because of the freon R12 vs R134a, but my parents' BMW '98 540 and '97 E420 both get super cold and they use R134a. Where the Corrado would get cold within 10 seconds, even at a stand-still, the GTI needs 30+ seconds and to get moving. Even the temp while on the freeway is just cool, not cold

BUT.... it's adequate, I guess. Disappointing for a new car but adequate.

Yes im calling the dealer tomorrow morning 7am when they open and hoping to get in right away. I know its been pretty hot everywhere around the states and FL is no exception so A/C is a necessity.

Do you remember exactly what "came loose"?

Man this seems to be common...my 07 with only 512 miles just went out...was working fine...when inside the house for a bit and then came back outside..started the car and nothing but hot humid air no matter what i do to the controls

I am hoping its just something that came loose like others said...

has anybody else had this problem..if so, what is the cause and what did the dealer do to fix it...

Its $h|t like this that drive me crazy, brand new car, not even 1000miles yet and the F*(#$* AC not working. VW sure is living up to there reputation

    Hmm.
This A/C failure issue seems to be turning into fairly big deal here....

just do a search...check out the number of them..

Mine started blowing hot air three times in the last two days while Im sitting at a light. All three times I switched the A/C button off and back on and it came back cold thankfully all three times.

    an appt is in order....

As I mentioned in another thread, I am on my 3rd compressor. The 2nd one died as I was leaving the dealer!! I was told the by the mechanic that the compressor are not made by VW and are from Japan. After my 2nd one died, there was no replacements anywhere in the US. They were all on backorder. That is way they ended up pulling a compressor out of a 2.0T Passat they had on the lot. They use many of the same parts and the compressor was a direct swap. So far.......so good!

Hmm, mine works okay for now. Its really hot and humid here but even then it seems to take longer than normal to cool off, and even then its chilled at best.

  14. 08-07-2006 01:26 PM #14
Yea, I was disappointed with the AC in my 07 Pkg1.

It doesn't get very cold and it takes a while. Does anyone know of how we can improve it, if anything can be changed?

  15. 08-07-2006 01:30 PM #15
don't know if you've tried these already but: close the diffuser on top of dash, shut off the glove compartment vent and shut off the under armrest vent. Air comes out much stronger and i had no problems in the 100 degree mugginess last week.

Like many suggested already, take the ride to a dealership and don't even bother yourself. I mean you paid serious money for the ride, so you can atleast use the warranty. Good Luck

The A/C died on my 07 GTI after 3 days of ownership on a 100 deg. day. It is at the dealership right now, so I'm not sure what is broken. I sure hope this isn't a problem like the coilpacks...

  18. 08-07-2006 01:51 PM #18
The AC in my 06 Passat sucks.... it takes like 1 min for it to blow SOME cold air. Everything it's fine when you drive but when you come to a light it just blows hot air.... damn.

It seems this problem is across the board with new VWs... Recall?

  19. 08-07-2006 01:57 PM #19
    Let VWoA know. Call them.

I have dealt with this for the last 45 days. When I talked to VW about why does it take 8 days to get parts from Germany and has anyone else had this issue. They told me that I seem to be the only one.

    So let them know.

I have went through 3 compressors also and finally it works really well.

But 3.5 months owning the GTI and 3 weeks in the shop with 3500 miles on the car is uncalled for.

  20. 08-07-2006 02:15 PM #20
This weekend on my GTI the 1 2 and 3 option on the fan stopped working but 4 works fine. The AC works fine at 4 that it. Before it stopped working a hear a big clunk and then it stopped working. Is this what you guys are having?

ME!! That is why the dealer ended up pulling the compressor out of a 2.0T Passat on the lot.

That sounds like the resistor/diode for the lower fan motor speeds went bad. The Dodge vans I used to drive at work would do that, I'd lose all the fan speeds except high, but the rest of the system was fine. Should be an easy fix, if that's what it is, unless it's buried in the dash or someplace.

What Dealership did you buy it at? THe ones here in New Orleans (area) suck.

BTW check out eClubvw.com for local VW action.

Took my GTI in this morning for my A/C probelm, they determined it was compressor. I was told there were no compressors in the US and that they would have to pull one off of the production line in Germany and to expect it to take more than a week more than likely two weeks. Why do I have a feeling that this is going to keep happening every 3-4 months until they design a new compressor.

    Calling VWOA tomorrow

Until then I'm stuck in a cobalt

is this problem mostly isolated to Gtis? How about Rabbit A/C, does it use the same compressor?

I dont think anyone really knows yet they just seem to be starting to pop-up there are 5-6 people on here who have them failed and I know of 2 other than me at the dealer I go to that have failed, 1 GLI 1 GTI and me GTI

    Calling VWOA this right now

who needs a/c in the car

One thing iv noticed, that stupid top vent in the middle on top of ur dash....close that shiat!!! Its useless!!!! Takes pressure away from the other vents also close ur rear vents who needs backseat passangers anyways lol....also close ur passenger vent......I make my passengers suffer

Also if you turn it up on high, the blowers going full blast, but the condencing coil is not drawing enoff air through the coil....soon as you start moveing the compressor tends to get up and kicking harder but you also are moving much more air through the Evap and condencer coil...when it comes down to a/c, air flow plays a BIG part......

    Make sense?

Doesn't really help when the compressor is dead and wont come on that's my problem and the topic of this thread, not how efficient it is or isn't

  33. 08-09-2006 06:49 PM #33
Another example of VW not being up to par with other manufacturers. I had a 1999 Beetle that the previous owner put 3 compressors on (all at VW dealerships).

  34. 08-11-2006 12:48 PM #34
Just got off the phone with VWOA, my compressor had been shipped from Germany 8/10/06 but it could be a week before it reaches my dealer.

I also asked them since this is obviously a failed design with so many of them going bad if it was re-designed or am I just getting another one that is going to fail in 5-6 months. The answer I got was we have no way of knowing whether or not a part is going to fail and that I contact my dealer regarding if the part had been redesigned because they have no way of telling there at VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!

VW if your reading your pissing off a loyal customer (as in 8 brand new ones since 1980)

  35. 08-11-2006 12:53 PM #35
VW will not infinitely pour money into shipping new compressors. Eventually hopefully they'll do a cost analysis of the whole thing and decide that it is worth it to fix the problem.
