Thread: What is the diference between and automatic and manual crank.

    1. 08-10-2006 05:17 PM #1
What is the diference between an automatic and manual crank. Ive found that the audi auto is different than a manual. Can anyone tell me what the difference is and if vw had the same difference in the golfs?
      thanks.

the snouts are different on at LEAST the AEB motors, not sure about the rest of the longitudinal motors.

Not the snouts, the flywheel end is different. The Auto cranks aren't machined for throw out bearings, and don;t have as pronounced a register sticking out (so as to clear the converter)

      What this means-

Any crank manual or auto crank will work in a transverse VW (assuming they came in the same style block, 058 or 06A)

You can use an auto crank in a manual transmission Audi IF you make an adapter to hold the throw out bearing.

You cannot use a manual crank in and auto UNLESS you machine down register to clear the converter.

Little out dated thread but you can use the auto bottom end Vw Motors with a manual tranny setup.
What is something you learned last year that you are going to do differently this year?

      Thats what he said

Except auto crank will not work with an audi (longitudal) transmission without an adapter.

just throwing this out there, on the audi AEB's if you have an auto crank you can drill out the center sleeve thats pressed in and us a v6 maual pilot bearing and it will work!
