Thread: Jetta MKII RWD in progress

  1. 10-10-2006 12:03 AM #2
what are you using for a drivetrain? (rear diff, shaft, trans?)

  2. 10-10-2006 12:04 AM #3
This should be a cool thread to watch. Lots of engineering challenges with this idea.

  3. 10-10-2006 12:07 AM #4
    for now it's just a 2l 16v with a locking diff

Sadly, I don't see it happening.

Why is there a steering rack in the back?

  13. 10-10-2006 03:46 AM #14
I'm guessing that he has to modify the front end stuff to work in the back with the trans, but I dunno much

Im confused. Is he putting hte motor in the back or just making the car RWD? If the motor was goin back there he has to have something there to adjust toe settings, but why the entire rack. you can gte replacements that work and you dont need that huge nasty looking rack.

If he is just going RWD. why put that factrory subframe back there in the first place? I dont get it?

    What is goin on here

thats pretty much exactly how my Mid engine RWD was built!

Nice use of the cage for reinforcement!

He probably put the rack back there because it was easy. I'ts probably just welded straight.

the rack is only there for temporary mock up, no it's not going to be a another VR setup , VW are the original 8V, the engine is not amazing but it's true to VW roots.

    the engine is a

1.8L PG block with flat high compression pistons 13:1 ratio
Shot peened connecting rods and a balanced knife edged crank
    aluminium pulleys,
ABA head with 268-272 cam with dual springs and maybe stainless valves
custom made 4-2-1 header with 3" exit

the hardest part so far was the tubular frame design, the rest is going nicely, I've been only working on it, on weekends since the end of july and it's starting to get cold here in the north of quebec.

I put alot of thought into the drivetrain, all my rally buddies are runny audi quattro's , the quattro systeme would of being a nice setup, but parts are rare here in canada and i'm in school (low budget)
The car had originally a full roll cage and a very modified 2L 16V on weber carbs but failed to find relyability, i've also had a G60 and a VR in this car. For the last 6 months i've been running a 2L 8V ABA with headers, cams, pulleys and a giac chip.

I also have anothere project underways, witch is a tubular frame MKII jetta with a GM350 small block and a audi locking diff, the engine shoud output around 550-600 FP of torque. But due to low budget I had to put it on hold for now. I'd like to be the first VW to compete in the canadian drift series

I might put another engine in the front and make a it a Suzuki Cultus pikes peak genre, but without the large wings and aprox 900BHP

I still dont see whats goin on. Mid motor or front motor RWD?

  25. 10-10-2006 04:39 PM #26
appears to be sorta a rear transverse. normal front engine setup transfered to the rear.

  26. 10-10-2006 09:06 PM #27
Here's a better view from the inside, the car is jacked up and the suspension is at it's highest.
