Has anyone else had problems with your exhaust manifold bolts coming loose? Mine is a 2005 PG GLI 1.8T and this has been the only problem its ever had. I first start to notice it when exhaust starts to sputter out very quietly, but after driving it for a few days, its starts to get really loud (not a good loud.....more like a "hey, ********, go get your car fixed because no one likes you" loud). This is the THIRD time I've taken it in. The first time they just tightened them. The second time they replaced every bolt on the manifold. This time....we'll see what they say. Its not like this is a major problem, but it is irritating having to schedule appointments and make arrangements to be carted around (preferrably in a chariot) while waiting for my car. Give me some feedback on this because this is bothering me.

Is it your downpipe connection or the exhaust manifold to head connection?

Werd brotha. I'm starting to think that I'm the only one that has had this problem I just can't figure out why those bolts would continually loosen. Let's go have beers this week Nate

yes i had this problem for a while and unfortunately for me they wouldnt fix it under warranty b/c i have an aftermarket exhaust, so i took the liberty to fix it myself.
first i tried tightening the bolts and the sound quieted down a little but just got louder, after about 100 miles one of the three just backed out again.
so then i just went bought new bolts along with a NEW GASKET and replaced it all. cured the problem and hasnt been a problem since. when i took the old bolts out there was absolutely no gasket there so i was glad that i went ahead and bought one.

here's a couple pics of the front one that kept backing out since you cant just look back there to see it...

      sorry about the resolution

Thank you for the input! I really appreciate it! I'm going to let the service guys down at the dealership know they need to replace the gasket along with all the bolts again. I'm just tired of this happening. Thanks again for the info!

Mine first happened at 13,000 miles, then at 17,000 miles, and now its happening again at 20,400 miles. These intervals are too close to each other to ignore so I'm going to see if having the gasket and all the bolts replaced will take care of the problem for good. If not, I'm not sure what I'm going to do Good call on the upgraded turbo though. Maybe that's what I'll do if it this fix doesn't work.

I ended up buying a stack of gaskets from VW... I have one left... ... It's from the motor mounts wearing out and causing the mani to tourqe against the turbo/exhaust during shifts. Now I've got another noise similar but somewhere else. the last time I changed my gasket that did'nt fix it and I stripped the turbo housing, so the next time I'd better install a new turbo.

Awesome. I'm loving the feedback I'm getting in this forum. Its going in on Monday to replace the gasket and all the manifold bolts. It might fix it, it might not. We'll just have to see what happens. Why is it only on the GLI's that we're seeing this problem? Are they set up any differently than the regular 1.8t's? The 20th ann's and 337's are so similar that I would imagine they would have the same problem, but I'm not hearing any complaints from them. Time to get an IY 20th I guess
